Long story, ignore if you like Roll Eyes

My dog (13 year old border collie mix) had a rough past 12 months. He had pretty major surgery last September. He was acting “old” and was unable to move around easily and was acting lethargic. He was having constipation issues and that is when the vet found a growth inside his abdomen that was about the size of a baseball.

My bride and I opted not to do a needle biopsy (his blood work was fine) and took him to a veterinary “specialist” for the surgery. Good thing we did not do the needle biopsy as the growth ended up being a blood pocket (I forget the term) and that would have probably killed him.

He was in rough shape for a few days after surgery but bounced back rather nicely and within a month was acting much “younger” and not having the discomfort that he was. His spleen was also removed as were his testicles Eek . (I never had him “fixed” before because it was never an issue in any way)

He was feeling very good but started acting lethargic (not as much) this June. Maybe it was the warmer temperatures and his age catching up with him. We decided that we should take him to “the farm” for possibly the last time. He was born there and we have not been back there in a few years. We found him there years ago.

The drive was 1,300 miles (each way) but it was well worth it. Pal travels very well (by land and sea) and he had the whole back seat to himself. Granted he would prefer to ride shotgun, but my wife would not like that so much. Razz

Anyways he was like a new dog once we got there. He ran and played like he has not in a couple of years. He was in and out of the pond dozens and dozens of times trying to help us fish. It was a lot of fun seeing him enjoy himself so much. Big Grin

He even squeezed into a spot to get under the house that was barely big enough for a cat to fit in. He had a little trouble getting out but managed fine.

After we got home he was doing well but a few weeks ago started acting “squirrelly”. He did not want to go in the backyard like he has for years just before I go to bed. Confused

I ended up coercing him to go for a walk around the block but I really had to work at it. He did not want to go. Unusual behavior as the only time he did that previously is when something spooked him. He did this for a few days.

One day during this odd behavior I saw him “leak” urine onto the tile floor. Not a lot, maybe about 2-4cc but enough to concern me. He did not even know he was doing it.

I took him to the veterinarian the next day. My vet loves my dog as he is well behaved and lets him pretty much do anything to him without complaining. (as long as I am in the room Wink ) He calls him his “feel good” dog because the way he came through last year.

He did blood workups and took a urine sample. His blood work came back perfect, so perfect the doctor mentioned that he wished his blood was so good. The urine test showed a little too much water in the urine. He has been drinking more water than normal, but he never really drank a lot of water previously. He was “borderline”. The drinking of more water than normal (for him) concerns me.

It was not an emergency but the vet recommended depriving him of water from midnight then taking another sample to see if his levels increased. (Make sure his kidneys are working as they should)

I was going away for a 4 day weekend and the doctor said that it could wait and to do the urine test when I got back. My dog stayed home with my bride and she had a hard time with him. Pal loves my wife very much and while she might be “Jesus” to him, I am the “Almighty”. Smile

He is very clingy to me and now clung to my wife much like the nickname I gave him years ago “Velcro Dog”. (I can’t even go to the bathroom alone)

She had a very difficult time getting him to go out. He would go out of the house but not venture far off my deck. She could not convince him to go for walks around the block. She took him to the beach (like I do daily) and he did go for very short walks then, but once did not even get out of the car.

She got upset and of course the dog senses that (He is almost as sensitive as an Irish Wolfhound Wink ) and gets “upset” himself. When I got home my wife was almost in tears because she felt like he was “dieing”.

I met her in the driveway and she had just gotten back from the beach where the dog would not get out of the car. Another dog even came by and tried to get him to play but he wanted no part of it.

Once I got home Pal was much happier. I know that he has separation anxiety, sometimes it is worse than others but I felt that something else was wrong. After I was home a couple of days he started acting squirrelly again. I did the second urine test and his water level dropped and he was within the normal range.

Pal started getting constipated again and when that happens I give him some plain vanilla yogurt (1/2 a serving) to help him along. But before I could do that last night he went when I took him to the beach. He went a few times Eek and cleaned himself out rather well and was feeling much better.

He was feeling so good in fact that last night while I was barbequing and watering outside he spent a good amount of time with me and wondering around the yard just like “old times”.

His urinary leaks seem to have gotten better and from what I can see stopped. (most of my flooring is wood, tile, or laminate so it shows easily)

Pal seems fine at the moment and since I have a good relationship with my vet and take him there regularly so I really don’t know why I wrote this essay out and posted it. Roll Eyes

Any advice is surely appreciated but I really doubt many people would read this deep into drivel.

For those that did and are interested here are some recent photos of “grandpa”

For a horrible moment I thought 'took... to the farm' was an American English euphemism for 'died' or , here, 'euthanised'. I read the post with some trepidation, expecting that ending Roll Eyes Just realised the American euphemism is 'bought the farm' Big Grin

Dogs have long memories.

You are definitely doing right and your dog made an excellent choice of owner Smile Hey, you even have washable floors, so he can leak if he wants ! Anyway, he's stopped. Think of the saving in incontinence pants ! That's one considerate dog, saving you money like that.

Best wishes to him for a long life. Smile

I'm glad you told us about Pal, Koz. I've wondered about him, since you've always said how close the two of you were. And still are! Smile
I'm with Fred - I was expecting a bad ending. But thanks for a good surprise! Big Grin
I've been through the good and the bad with a couple of dogs - and cats, too. And those critters are family! (I keep my avatar in memory of Jesse.)
Keep us posted, especially with the good news! Smile
Good thoughts!
And oh yes - he's adorable!

Fred, it was a play on words Wink . I grew up in New York City and whenever a dog went missing in the neighborhood we were told that he was “ taken to the farm to romp and play for the rest of his days ”. In other words the dog most likely got hit by a car and died. Roll Eyes

Thank you for the comments, coming from you that means a lot to me.

Why yes they are fake Canadian geese. The real ones are quite the nuisance. They are not so bright, arrogant, loud, pushy, and make quite the mess so these “stand ins” are even better than the originals Big Grin .

( Roll Eyes Canadians)

Thanks dg Smile

I felt so good on Friday and Saturday. Pal was acting fine, it was like a switch flipped and all was well. He started acting a little “weird” yesterday and this morning. I will keep a close eye on him but I think in a few days he will be ok.

His best “dog friend” is coming to visit for about a week. My brother in law’s lab – chow mix that Pal has known (and liked) for over 10 years is getting older too. My brother in law and his family are going from home (Connecticut) to Virginia Beach to visit some old friends.

They really love their dog too but realize that being in a car for 8-10 hours each way might be too much for him. He is a large dog and is more squirrelly than Pal by far. I have to make sure that I disable any electronic device that “beeps” due to it will cause him great duress Roll Eyes . He is a good dog though.

Thanks again folks,, Big Grin

A couple of more photos I took Saturday morning.

You can see how smart he is, Pal only swims in designated areas.

Good to read that,Koz. Smile

"To the farm" a play on words ? So I was right without knowing it Big Grin. Must try that more often.

Here we euphemistically say ' he's gone for a Burton' for 'he's died' (possibly a reference to someone going out for a beer, Burton being an ale, and so gone for quite a while) and , in the North, 'he's popped [pawned] his clogs'.Workers in cotton mills wore clogs. If they were ever to pawn their clogs ( highly unlikely) they certainly would not be expecting to be out in the forseeable future!

Thanks all for the kind words. It is true Tex, Pal and I are still very, very close. (Too close some would say Roll Eyes ) That is why I know when he is not feeling “right”.

Last week I got to dog sit my brother in law’s dog. He is about the same age as Pal and is a very good dog. The dogs get along fabulously as Pal is “the boss” and Buck has let him for many years even though he is three times Pal’s size.

The week went fine and Pal was feeling really good. Buck left on Saturday and in years past Pal would be happy to have his home to himself again. He usually does get a little “stressed” when Buck is around for several days but I think he misses him this time.

Buck has to go through “reprogramming” by my brother in law because since he is so good to me (He listens and obeys me better than Pal does) I return the favor. 2-3 beach runs a day and I got him to eat without going through the elaborate ritual my in-laws do. Wink

Anyways since yesterday Pal has started acting a little “squirrelly” again. He seems overly cautious and does not want to go in the back yard. At lunchtime today he did not want to go for a walk.

I won’t take him to the beach today after work as he really did not seem “into” it yesterday. (three trips Roll Eyes ) I will take him to a place that I have not taken him since before his surgery last year, the dog park.

There is a nice large dog park not too far and I figured if I get him running around with other dogs he might feel better. I hope we do not have the same issues we used to there.

The place only opened about two years ago and it is really cool. Almost two acres, fenced in, half the area is shaded woods and it has everything a dog park could need. Smile

Problem in the past Pal was “intact” when he visited. He would do the dog thing and within 15-20 minutes the alpha dogs would end up in a small group. (4-6 dogs) After that group was established Pal even though is a small dog would try and lead the group. Big Grin

Most time it went well, other times not so much. A big German Shepard generally does not like a lil’ black & white dog jumping on his back and trying to have his way with him. Eek

I would usually end up leaving the park in 30-40 minutes each time because of Pal’s “authority” issues. Since he is now missing his testicals I am thinking he won’t be as authoritative as he once was.

Anyways just some more recent photos I uploaded and a video of him yapping and fishing. I never tried to link a video before. I got this little camera for my birthday last year and am really getting used to it now. Sorry to keep posting photos but.... Roll Eyes

I just figured I would post an update.

Since my last post Pal has celebrated his 13th birthday. We really don't know what day he was born, it was around November 1996 so we just make it Thanksgiving Day. Wink (I am thankful for him) No dog parties but I gave him some extra beach runs that day.

There is some good news and some not so good news. Bad news first, about six weeks ago Pal was having big trouble with his bowel movements again. He was struggling and straining to get only (what I call Roll Eyes ) "nuggets" out. (small pieces)

After a couple of days of that he was struggling and getting nothing out. I knew he was compacted and feared the worst. (another internal mass, or cancer tumor) I took him to the vet and sure enough he was backed up. The vet did an enema and some blood tests. He took a before and after x-ray to see if he was cleared out.

Pal has an anal hernia that basically is a pocket that can fill with waste and get stuck then causing constipation. We knew this last year, but there were other more important things to deal with then.

The vet suggested adding Metamucil to his food. Being a picky eater I did not know if that would work. It looks and tastes like sand. Razz (yes I tried it, I never give my dog anything like that without trying it myself first)

He also suggested changing his diet. Being a picky eater and not overweight I never saw a problem with feeding him some "people food" leftovers mixed in with his supper. He also got a slice of cheese a couple of times a week. (training tool, and to take his thyroid medication with)

I have severely cut back on the cheese and beef he has been eating. I now mix in a little turkey with his food and a very healthy tablespoon of the Metamucil. It has been working well. His bowel movements have been consistent and fiber filled. Big Grin He is eating (almost Roll Eyes ) like a dog lately too. He licks his bowl clean almost every day. He must like the taste of sand.

There was one instance where he was straining a little and producing only "nuggets" for a day or so, but after inquiring with my bride I think I know why. She fed him two days in a row and he did not come close to finishing his supper. Roll Eyes

My bride's style of feeding him is to put a couple of bigger chunks of "good stuff" (beef, cheese, or egg) on top of his food. I always shred whatever I mix in with his food, more now than before. I think what and how she fed him contributed to the minor setback. I now am the one that will feed him every day. Wink

Asides from that minor setback Pal has been feeling very well. He has been "squirrely" down at the beach during the daylight hours recently but that is due to the duck hunters in the back bays. He is a sissy when it comes to gunshots and knows when hunters are in the area. I am not positive on how he knows, but he knows.

Yesterday I took him to a beach we have not been to in a while. His memory is fantastic and once I make a turn off the normal road he knows where he is going and gets very excited. Big Grin We had a great walk for about a mile and just as I was giving Pal some water from about 200 yards away BANG! BANG! BANG! Eek

I watched the hunter's Labrador swim out and retrieve the fallen ducks as Pal was tail tucked and done Roll Eyes

Anyway in a nutshell he is doing very well. The urinary leaks have completely stopped (a few months now), his blood tests are perfect, the x-ray showed no mass or tumor of any sort inside him. Smile

I heard that the Midwest / South Central US got pounded on Christmas.

We had a lot of rain last Saturday and it was over 50F on Sunday so all that white stuff is gone now Big Grin

Unfortunately that did not last and it is now about 23F and real windy. The wind chill has to be about 5F

Taking Pal to the beach will be fun tonight Razz

He likes the cold weather so I indulge (spoil) him. He will have a good time frolicking in the frozen tundra as I try to keep up dressed in so many layers that I could barely move. He is worth it though. Smile

Thanks Blam, and that there is very funny Big Grin

I didn't want to do it, and I feel sorry for the lil' fella whenever he takes a peek down there but it was for the best I suppose.

At least that is what the woman veterinarian said Eek

Ah, poor chap ! Hope he hadn't found out what they were for before he lost them. The old dog here was 'done' after he'd sired several litters .Afterwards the senior bitch, and dam of some, kept flirting with him outrageously and the look of bewilderment on his face and the look of frustrated, puzzled disappointment at rejection on hers was sad to be behold !
