I'm looking to move from Hong Kong to the UK with my dog. Apparently HK is a category 3 rabies area, due to being land locked with China. In HK all dogs must be licensed (chipped) and vaccinated against rabies, so actually the territory is 'clean'. Still though she would have to do the 6 month prison on arrival in the UK. I know the quarantine period in France is much shorter (only 6 weeks), but we would then have to reside there for 6 months before being entitled to the Pet Passport. I also checked going via Japan. She would have to do 1 month quarantine in Japan. Japan is deemed free of rabies, so entry to the UK is immediate on the PP scheme. If we went HK-Japan-UK in a month would there be a problem at the UK end? Does anyone have any experience with pet travel? Does anyone have any idea if this route would be feasible/acceptable? Any suggestions for the most stress free method(for both the dog and me!)? Thanks for any ideas.

The 'Long Haul' (non European) Countries, of which Japan is one since January 2001, have to abide by specific travel rules. To quote:
"Pets travelling from a qualifying Long Haul country must enter the UK by air on an approved route, with the exception of pets travelling from Ascension Island, the Falkland Islands or St Helena which may travel by sea. Pets from Long Haul countries may not enter the UK by any other sea route or through the Channel Tunnel. Pets travelling by air from a Long Haul country must travel to the UK in a crate which has had a seal applied to it".
It can get very complicated!! I have attached below the link to the DEFRA web site. Click on this for a full explanation of the rules and regulations. I hope this helps with your route planning.
