has anyone used the preventic dog collar for ticks. i am really having a problem with fleas on my inside dogs and cats and ticks on my outside dog. i have been using frontline and advantage, but it doesn't seem to help. my vet suggested the collar for the big dog in addition to the frontline. they are kind of pricy, so i was wondering if any of you have used it and how it worked. any other suggestions. thanks.

Garlic. Don't laugh. I had a really bad infestation of fleas, and got rid of them with garlic. I fed the dogs powdered garlic on their food, sprinkled granulated garlic all over the yard and it worked. (I should mention that garlic is staple at my house, and is used for most meals.)

Advantage does not control ticks. Frontline does. The problems with flea collars are that they may cause an allergic reaction around the neck of the dog and that they tend to be area specific, they don't get ticks which are on the lower half of the dog.Frontline is absorbed into the bloodstream and covers the whole dog. As it happens, ticks tend to prefer the ears and the higher parts but that's not the whole answer. I find ticks on the lower half of mine ! Frontline does appear to work but it's efficacy is not as long as it appears to be for fleas.

I did wonder whether the problem lay in the dogs' bedding, certainly a big part of flea infestation. My vet thinks that not the case, though I've read that it can be. She says that my dogs will always be picking up ticks because they are always in grassland, where ticks are just waiting to affix themselves to a passing host.

As I've mentioned in other posts, I'm a big fan of Revolution.
I don't know about ticks, but it controls a host of other parasites. I've used it on my cats for years now.

I started using it when my late Gremlin was allergic to fleas, and no other brand seemed to help. I put the drops on at the nape of the neck once a month. And as long as Gremlin was alive, I didn't need drops for my other cat (Jesse, my avatar). I guess they shared their fleas. Big Grin

My daughter and I still use it on our current cats. In fact, her cat is so big (as was Gremlin), that she uses Revolution for dogs on him!

I agree. I had the vet call at the house on Friday to give the two cats and the dog their annual shots, heart worm, rabies shots etc. We've had a really bad flea problem this year, so she treated all the animals with Revolution. Five days later, there are no fleas left. I'm really happy with it so far.

Shouldn't this be in "Pets" ?
