My puppy is about 3 and a half months old now. She's pretty good sized already. She's half lab and every says she's going to be huge! Well she's SO hyper and bites all the time. It wasn't so bad when she was a little puppy, but it's starting to hurt now. We try as best we can to discipline her every time she does, but it just doesn't seem to be working. Will she grow out of this or is there some way we can teach her not to once and for all??

She will grow out of it, but don't forget she's teething and her teeth are driving her mad. Make sure she has plenty of things she can chew and keep telling her it's not OK to chew you. She'll get the message eventually because she wants to please you, but it will take time. I've been savaged by vicious puppies too!

I wouldn't wait for her to 'grow out of it'. Whatever you allow her to do as a puppy, she will do as an adult.

The teething part of chewing and biting will slow as her adult teeth finish coming in... but that takes several months. Providing correct chewing objects is essential. Whenever she picks up something incorrect, take it from her, then replace it with something ok.

As far as mouthing people, you've got the stop that NOW before it grows into something worse. She needs to learn that it is NEVER ok to mouth anyone. A loud sound, like OUCH, UH-HUH, something to break her concentration, even NO BITE!

I would definately look into local obedience training schools as well. When she learns her proper place in the social family pack structure, many times problems will solve themselves.

Also, putting a basic foundation of training on her now, will help in the future. You will have the instructor available for answering questions and your puppy will have socialization time.

How old was she when you got her? Often times, when puppies are taken away from their littermates too early, they miss their time of learning proper social ettiquette. Quite often, improper biting/mouthing is due to not being corrected enough by their littermates... then it becomes your job.

Good luck!

I read somewhere that when a puppy bites you that you should go "OWWW" in a loud deep voice. This usually works the first couple of times. If this keeps on happening then you need to do the OWWW and if he/she doesn't stop immediately then grab them by the back of the neck and give them a little shake. This is how the mother would discipline. It really worked with my German Shepherd puppy. You have to be consistent though and everyone in your family has to do this.

we got our puppy to stop biting when playing by yelling really loud OW!!!! whenever she niped us, and by sticking our fingers in her mouth and yelling OW! shes now 2 years old and has never even niped us while playing. (weve scraped our fingers on her teeth a few times while rough housing but shes immediatly stopped playing and licked our hands when this happened)
now weve just gotta stop her peeing on the floor from happiness when my moms dog comes over Big Grin

By the way, my puppy had quit biting and hadn't done it for some time but today she tried it again. Probably just testing the waters. I yelled out a loud OWW and she stopped immediately.
