Roll Eyes One of my 4H dog club members wants to get a new dog and since most of her family is allergic all their dogs have been outside dogs. They are trying to think of a breed that will least interfere with their allergies. Can any of you suggest any so that I can tell her at our next meeting. Thanks.

Chihuahuas have a very good reputation for people with allergies. A lot of people even believe that they help people with asthma, but others say that's a myth.

Chihuahuas aren't very good for a family with children under 11 or 12, however.

Another idea might be a hairless breed. They're not going to win any beauty pageants or have anyone cooing over how cute they are (they're sort of ugly, IMHO), but hairless dogs probably wouldn't bother allergies at all.

One other idea is a Corgi. They don't shed much.

Here is a site where you can read about several different breeds of dogs considered better for allergy sufferers.

Dog Breed Info

You can't rely on amount of shedding to make the decision. Neither can you rely on what works for someone else, as everyone is an individual, as well as the dogs themselves.

Many breeds that are known for causing less problems for people with allergies, are also breeds that will need more grooming - such as the corded breeds.

Whatever breed you are considering, please go visit them in person, to see if there is a reaction. You do not want to bring home a dog, have it for a week, only to discover you made the wrong choice. It's would be too stressful not only on your family, but for the dog as well.

Oh... and I have a hairless dog... and I personally think he's VERY handsome!! Smile
