Our 8-month-old Chihuahua is going through her first heat. She just finished her period. The bothersome thing is that her vagina is puffy and sticks out about an inch! She doesn't seem to be in any particular pain, but the appearance seems abnormal, although I admit that I've never had a female dog who wasn't fixed before. Is this normal for a Chihuahua in heat?

her area should remain puffy for about 2 weeks after bleeding stops- druing this time is when she is receptive and can get pregnant. If her area remians enlarged longer than that she is most likely pregnant.

I used to breed chihuahuas, and that was my home "pregnancy test" was if her area remained enlarged after the 2 weeks period.
