:Hi everyone, I am new to this site. My owner surrenderd puppy has Parvo. She is working on her 5th day now. She had a terrible strong strain. Her owner didn't want to pay to save him, so I took him,and he is now in the emergency clinic in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was near death, so lethargic, He has been vomiting on and off the whole time. He white count when he went in was only 14,000, then they gave him a plasma transplant and now it is 55,ooo. So this is good, they say his vitals are all normal, no temp, not anemia. heart sounds good, electolytes are good, sugars are great. But he is still doing a lot of vomiting.
He was put on very, very , strong anti vomiting meds to day about 2 hrs . ago, cause the other wasn't working. It was 118.00 for 3 pills. He is in the middle of his 5th day. He still seems lethargic, but will walk out of his cage, rolls on his back to have his belly scratched, and wags his tail. Will this vomiting never end?
Surely the Parvo has to stop sooner or later.?
Since he is in the middle of his fifth day shouldn't this start to be the turn around period? Please help. I don't care about the cost. I have already exceeded $2300.00, plus $818.00 I have already paid to earlier doctor, plus I'm losing my mind with worry. I had to use my mortgage payment to pay the first amount, How I am going to pay the rest I don't know. IMOM animal grant donated $500.00. Isn't that wonderful. I have things on ebay. If i have to sell my car I will.
I love Hank, I used to go to the neighbors house and see him, I took him Advantage,Heartguard, cause I knew his owner wouldn't, his owner said that he had his shots. obviously not. I love this little guy. With this being his 5th day, do you guys think with everything I have told you he will be alright?
The emergency clinic said from the beginning that anything can happen. But most of the doctors said he is not going to die, they just have to get this vomiting stopped. Doesn't Parvo quit, like the flu sooner or later.

Also, to Sasha's mommy. I had a similar problem with a vet. He was my vet for 8 yrs. I took Hank to him, and the next day they were complaining that Hank was stinking up the place, and they were sick of wiping his butt, and cleaning up the vomit. Then they ask me why I cared , cause he wasn't even my dog? the vet was the one to ask this. I took him from there to the 24 hr clinic. these people are supposed to love animals, not be so self absorbed. thanks for letting me vent.

Recovery from Parvo is very difficult and often very slim with severe cases. I hope your dog gets better, but you should truely work toward accepting the possible (probable) outcome and be ecstatic if a better one occurs. Frown

I feel compassion and sorrow for your situation and I think you were a wonderful person for caring so much for an animal that you didn't own.

Good luck to you.

Here is a site that discusses this illness more:

Hi Carolyn. Welcome to Answerpool.

Its nice to see there are still good people such as yourself in the world. I know you love the little guy very much. I do have to warn you that sometimes vets can take advantage of situations. They know that you love the puppy and will do anything to save it. That is a very bad position to be in. I have a few friends who have been in similar situations. I know someone who had a cat in the hospital. She kept paying and paying. Once she said she couldn't pay anymore and may have to put the cat to sleep- the doctor suddenly let her take the cat home. I also know someone who paid over $8,000 to save a newborn puppy who ended up dying anyway. I know of another person who spent $12,000 on a dog who ended up not making it. The doctors kept saying the dog needed to be monitored. At $1000.00 a day- it adds up quick. I HOPE that you didn't tell the doctor how desperate you were to save your puppy. I don't think mortgaging your house or selling your car is the right thing to do. I think you should watch out for the hospital taking advantage of you. It happens often. All of my positive thoughts are going your way and I wish you the best. Please keep us updated.
