Hi All!

I am new here and wanted some advice pertaining to my Pit Bull Princess, Chloe Belle..........I live on 155 acres of unfenced rental property (fencing is not an option) and my Pittie likes to explore the wooded acreage and comes home infested with ticks everyday - i have to tweeze off 30 to 40 nightly...........I have tried every tick remedy known to the canine race, and the best I have found is Frontline Plus (BioSpot did NOT repel them)that will kill them off after a few days.......meanwhile I have them crawling on me and my other dogs if I can't get them all fast enough.........My other issue is trying to keep her safe from being attacked by a wild animal (there are foxes, coyotes further out, possums etc.) she has come with cuts and scrapes and has begun littering the property with corpses ranging from large racoons to a fawn........she has never shown any aggression what so ever toward any of my other dogs (including fosters and dogs that wander on to the property) or to my cat or people ever........She is good as gold and very sweet-natured. I have heard rumors that there idiots in my neck of the woods that set illegal traps on property in the area (and in fact I had a foster dog disappear) so this is also a huge concern.....Do I put her on a lead where she will be safe but miserable, or try to find her another home? She was rescued from a kill shelter last winter so she has already had abuse and neglect in her life and she is very attached to me, and I to her. Finding another home to rent when I have a Pit Bull, Rott and several chihuahuas is very unlikely.
Advice much appreciated! Smile

I am going thru a tick infestation like I never have seen...So heres what I'm doing....
Frontline is the best...
Also you can put and rub into the dogs fur, 5% Sevin, but only put it on once a week...
I have had to treat my carpets in the house because tick eggs where there and hatching...This morning was the first for doing that... Hope like hell it works....A good flea spray is good for that...
Don't know what else to tell you , other than hope for an early winter...
To let the dog run freely like you do is not wise...
A new home might be the best for her.

Thanks for the reply!

Do you know where I can get the Sevin?

I know letting her run free is not wise but my only other option is to tie her up (electric fencing is not an option for her breed - and I wouldn't do that to a dog anyway)........Do you think I should put her on a lead?

Well...I don't know the first to tell you about the ticks.lol.But I live in the country myself and I have found that it you have a large direct line from point A to point B a zip line works great.I feel as though when they are tied that way, they are not tied up by the neck and they can have room to roam...safely and can get plenty of exercise.

Sevin product reviews

Controversial?

Maybe not

More from Cornell

Home Depot and similar stores should carry Sevin the the garden area.

If there are traps in the area, I would definitely put the dog on a lead, one as long as you can make it. This will also allow you to treat the entire area (the the dog can cover) with a tick repellant.

5% Sevin is a dust used for bug control on flowers, veggies etc... It is mild enough to use once a week on animals, all though, 2 times probably wouldn't hurt...
Most hardware stores, nurserys, etc will carry it...Very common product.....
P>S> Do not use a collar if you teter him on a long cable run... Please use a harness... Too many animals have chocked to death from collars.. Also , if you gave him a rinse off every day, you could use the Sevin more often...

I agree with Fritzzs ( Eek ) about the harness being a more humane choice.

Hi,

I am aware of the age of this question, however, I just now learned of answerpool.

I own two Pit Bulls, and I urge you to please give this dog up. There is a lot of information to be found here, http://www.unchainyourdog.org/index.html that I hope will make your decision easier.

If your pup cannot be a house dog, in your home, then it needs to go. Chained dogs are far more likely to bite than house dogs, and no dog should ever be allowed to run free. Pit Bull's get enough bad press, please don't contribute to it, let this dog go on to another home!

I would very scared to have a rotteweiler , pitbull, and chichuas. I hope you do not leave them alone. If your pit is bringing home fawns, and such. That alone is very scary. I would be scared that she would start looking at my chichudas as prey soon. I have a foster pitbull, and I am finding him a home with someone that has so other dogs. Pits are supposed to be better off by themselves, or if another dog, not another pit, and it should be the opposite sex. As sweet as you say she is, there's something just not right if she's killing fawns, that's sad too. Alot of people are predjudice against pitbulls, and they may shoot her. My neighbor german shepherd got shot with a arrow by a hunter that wasn't even supposed to be on the property. I would hate to run into any strange dog in the woods.
