My vet has suggested I micro chip my dogs. I'm curious if any animal shelters actually check for these when they are taken in. Also how effective would it be in keeping them stolen. Thanks,

At our shelter, we scan every stray dog and cat the comes into the shelter.

As far as preventing the animal from being stolen, I really don't think that's going to help any. How would the theif know?

On the other hand, a microchipped animal that is registered with the national agency, would show proof of ownership should there be a problem. I would hope that the microchip registries verify any notifications of changes in ownership.
