No matter where my toddler's urine filled pullup is, the dogs will find them and eat them. Same goes for personal trash items during that time of month!! It is horrible and I've tried everything to stop them but nothing works. Anyone know why they do this and what I can do???
Why they do it is a disgusting mystery. Trash cans with tight fitting lids and placing items into ziploc bags before disposal will curb this habit. You can also sprinkle a non toxic liquid soap like Dr. Bronners or Suave shampoo or cayenne pepper on the items after disposal.

I will have to try the cayenne pepper and/or Suave shampoo. I hadn't thought of that before. They can open the lids on trash cans and even doors!! I'm willing to try anything cause I'm tired of picking up all those messes and then the mess when the dogs eliminate it naturally
The very best solution to keeping a dog out of trash cans is to keep the cans totally out of the dog’s reach. This means putting the cans behind an unaccessible door like in the linen closet...or the pantry. If your garage is accessible from say your kitchen or laundry room. Why not keep a metal trash can by the door with a very tight fitting lid and dispose all your trash there.
Most people don’t like this solution because leaving trash containers out in various locations in the home is convenient and they also don’t want to change things for a dog. But see, your not doing it for the dog. . . . . Your doing it for your own peace of mind.
Often booby traps ( i.e. pepper, bitter apple spray, dish soap )don’t work Because with each item you try, you are training the dog that there is a way around these. The same goes with lids. Don’t start out with easy to close lids. Buy the tightest lid you can find and run two very strong bungee cords from one handle through the center handle on the lid and to the other side.
Metal cans are practically chew proof and make a lot of a noise when knocked over which would alert you that the dog is attempting a raid. Heavy perfumed trash bags can be a help but NOT a foolproof item.
Places like home depot, menards, ace hardware, true value etc. . .should have in stock metal trash cans in various sizes to suit your needs. If any one of these places do not have metal cans but stock heavy duty plastic cans, make sure that the lid fits extra snug and if necessary purchase bungee cords for extra measure.
