Check the phone book. Animal shelters often provide this sort of class. But you have to be strict and consistent. You can't be the mean one and have your wife let the dog get away with everything. A dog messing in the house is unacceptable and it needs to be trained, immediately. The longer you wait, the harder it will be. Every time it starts to squat, you have to grab it and run outside so it starts to connect peeing with outside. If you find a mess it has made you show it the mess and tell it "no" or whatever your "no word" is (some trainers recommend you not say "no" because we use it so often in conversation, it will confuse the dog -not because it might make it feel bad) and take it outside. But you have to both do it, all the time. Otherwise, you might as well just move to the garage.

be sure to put her out first thing in the morning and last thing at night and after every meal. be sure and praise her when she goes outside, because dogs like to please their owners. don't scold her after the fact unless you catch her. dogs can tell by your voice that you are angry, but they don't know why unless you get on to them when the bad behavior is happening. never hit your pet. that just makes them afraid of you. good luck.

I recently acquired a Cocker Spaniel who had the same problem! We tell her potty/poopy and praise her immensely when she does. I am also able to keep an eye on her while outside to see exactly what it is she does. If she goes potty, I tell her good girl.. potty. Or vice versa for the poopy. Make sure you watch to see what it is she does. The Cocker was abused and soon caught on to this method! I also have a PB Chihuahua who adopted us. We found him, and he came to us, and has been here since! He did have accidents at first, and he is an elderly guy! Most people paper train a Chi. They can be a handful to potty train, thankfully, my little man already was and goes out to do his thing. If you choose this, you must watch them carefully, as they get cold VERY easy. My little man comes right in to snuggle on my lap. I am in Iowa tho, where it does get below zero! Hope I have helped a bit! Skye.
I don’t mean to sound judgmental, but you really shouldn’t have a dog if you aren’t willing to invest the necessary time to train her. They have once-a-week classes at night, on weekends, to fit all schedules. You must take her out every time she has an accident, and as Misty says it is essential to praise her warmly when she does it right. You also have to put her out often so that she has the opportunity to go outside and not in. No doubt she is comfortable with going inside, so you have to make her comfortable with going outside.
