2 days ago i noticed my dogs muzzle and eyes were swollen. she had a very bad allergic reaction to mint a few years ago and the same thing happened so i didnt think much about it until yesterday, when small bumps started showing up on the very top of her muzzle, above the hair line of her nose. they started swelling more and oozing bloody puss, so i took her to the vet. they gave her an antihistimine shot which took the swelling away from her muzzle and eyes, and anti biotics for the open sores. this morning there was no swelling, but the bumps were much larger, and oozing a lot. she also started shaking her head this morning. she isnt scratching at it, or even seeming to notice its happening. shes just as playful as ever and her appitite isnt affected.
i took her back in, and they scheduled a biopsy for thursday. thursday is a long way off.
does anyone have ideas what this could be? mainly just so i have something to occupy my time researching until thursday, because that will seem like forever, and then even after that i will have to wait for the results.
im not sure what type of dog she is as we got her from the pound, but every picture ive ever seen of a Stabyhoun (Fresian Pointer)is exactly like her. (except she is solid black) shes 6 years old this summer.
my vet's first thought was bug bites, and he is also thinking it could be lupus. i sure hope its not lupus. her medical insurance doesnt start until tuesday. Mad

Many medical conditions can have multiple symptoms or symptoms which mimic that of another illness. Even though your post does not give more information on your vet’s thoughts and discussions. I’m going to take a guess that he was thinking of discoid lupus which in most situations is treated with a topical corticosteroid ointment. More aggressive cases immunosuppressive therapy is needed.

I would guess from your description that a bacterial skin infection (pyoderma) is the cause. Staphylococcus is frequently the culprit, but other bacteria can also invade and a skin scraping or biopsy is needed to determine not only if it is present but also which type or if it is a fungal infection. Different bacteria respond differently to medications and doses.

Parasites, allergies, hormonal disorders, inadequate immune system, short coats, skin folds, calloused skin, skin trauma caused from grooming, scratching, dirt, and in some breeds. . . . hereditary factors. Any one of these can be an underlying cause for secondary bacterial infections.

In most cases pyoderma appears as a rash, it can affect only one particular location or generalized over the body. Lesions can appear gradually or suddenly. The lesions may or may not itch. They may be only a rash or hair loss, small bumps or pimples that have pus or blood or blood filled blisters can occur. Crusting, scaling, discolored spots may be seen. The skin may be red and / or hot.

Your vet may want to do a complete blood count as well. Other laboratory tests may be needed as well. Treatments will vary depending upon diagnostic results, the individual, and type of bacteria present.

thanks for the reply, gives me a lot to look into so i can ask the vet all sorts of questions to make sure he doesnt miss anything ^^
it has gotten a lot better, its all scabbed over and isnt bleeding anymore. she's rubbing it a bit with her paw, but not a lot and usually only if she's excited, which she does anyway.
i have noticed a small bump over each eye, right where she has a few long eyelashes, and a few tiny ones right along the edge of her left ear, but those havent bled, they are too small.

hopefully next week i will know what this is and how to treat it. Smile

we got the results back today, she had an allergic reatcion to bug bites which then led to her hair follicles getting infected which caused the bleeding bumps.
they dont know what type of bug bite, but at least it isnt lupus. Smile
