Well I actually just mentioned this in another post. But guess it would be Zebu. And just the other night I had capers for the first time. Who knew they actually are buds from a shrub? Ewe!

I am not particularly adventurous,
so I guess it would be the eel bowl
from Tokyo Express. It does not rank
among my favorite flavors !

I've eaten beefalo, which was brought by my brother from Colorado to Georgia and we grilled the bugers. A slightly gamey taste, but good burgers all the same.

I've tried sushi on three different occassions. Sushi does not suitme.

Calamari is certainly worth the try. The squid is like a tastless sponge, just waiting for the chef to fill it with the flavors of choice. My preference is lots of garlic and butter.

Then again, a dozen raw oysters with saltines, horseradish and a drop of tobasco and I'm happy. Smile

Not adventurous here either, McRib is probably the weirdest thing I have eaten!! Smile

As a kid I used to live near a dog buscuit factory.
They used to make this one particular buscuit about the size of a waffle.
I would sneak round back and grab one off the cooling rack.
they tasted brilliant and I got a shiny coat as well.

Also as I fish for carp, on the bank I often eat the occassional Boillie ( small balls of fish bait )
There are some superb flavours my favorite are Tutti fruitti

Escargo?- no thanks! I sat beside a friend one evening who ordered this--smelled delicious but knowing what they were and looking at the shells had my stomach jumping!

Calimari?- again, no thanks. Handeling those slimy squid while out deepsea fishing is quite enough to turn me away.

I have had Cajon spiced alligator appetizers, not bad at all-- Beef tongue, didn't care for it, -venison and elk, delicious. Had beefalo, much like hamburger - wasn't impressed.

Born and raised in California so artichokes are a yearly, seasonal vegetable. Love the hearts with mayonaise.

A big NO to any and all raw fish or meat though I do love my steaks rare.

I travelled the world a bit in my younger days, and ate some pretty strange stuff. Stir fried locusts in Africa, fried mealy grubs, Swallows, chicken heads, lizards in Autralia, etc.

But the worst was in a restaurant on Kowloon Island, which I didn't know was a snake restaurant. You had to choose one and they killed and skinned it in front of you, then stir fried it in a wok at your table.

I really had to force some of it down, so as not to offend my host. But shortly after, I had to force myself to keep it from coming back up !

Oh yuck! Some of you have me beat all to pieces! Eek

When I was a kid, I ate beef tongue a few times - it was pretty good!
I like chicken gizzards, hearts and livers - but if I'd heard of them AFTER I knew what they were, I probably would never have tried them.

I've eaten beefalo, buffalo, squirrel, rabbit, sea turtle, alligator... (the last 4 of which all tasted like chicken! Wink )
I've eaten crawfish (NOT the heads!) - they're OK, but it's too much trouble to get to what little meat there is.

Cyberlaol - I could probably handle Tar Tar - and I LOVE my steaks rare! Razz
But I have no interest in trying raw seafood!

Though I've been around people eating them, I've never been able to try calf brains or chitterlings (chit'lins)! Eek

(Koicarp - A shiny coat? Big Grin )

I've got to ask...what is BEEFalo? I've heard of Bufalo but Beefalo?

Di, fried calamri is delicious! And Escargot in puff pastry...to die for!

Cavier served with brie on a water cracker...mmmm

But gotta say, NO WAY, NO HOW would I EVER go to a snake restaurant!!!

I'm too much stuck in a rut to eat too many things out of the ordinary.

I guess the most exotic things I've eaten would include:
Beefalo
Calimari
Escargot
And for me, these two were out of the ordinary:
Deer
Pheasant

well take your pick, due to a number of survival schools and visits to foreign lands as a guest I have eaten the following:

- raw lizard
- rattlesnake
- rabbit
- grasshopper cooked
- boar
- raw fish
- fermented soybean curd
- raw fish eggs, not caviar either!
- kimchi ...various types
- Aussie vegemite
probably some others in there too but just can't remember!

Yuck- just remembered the worst....First of all I was raised by very strict rules, one of which was, you eat all of what is put in front of you. One weekend we were staying with friends of my parents and were served brains and eggs for breakfast. Needless to say, I got it down with a smile on my face, (or else), the next morning I claimed to have a stomach ache just in case something else as bad was to be served.

Blood Pudding...loved it, did not know what it was until after I eaten two servings, was too late to get squeemish then.

Buffalo, quite good
Goat....made me sad when I learned that I was devouring a petFrown I was only 8.
Other stuff that some find exotic, , venison, sushi, abalone and quail

It looks like Markyb has won the contest so far. I have to admit being jealous of your travels. But, that is what you are supposed to do, get a taste culture figuratively and literally. I think that I will nominate you for an episode of Survivor!

I'm with Mrs. S. I bet there are a lot of strange things I would eat and like. You just can't tell me what I'm eating. I still to this day am not crazy about seafood. I had an aqarium as a kid and equated it to eating my pets.

LOL@ Honiluv!! Granny will point a shotgun at you and mean it over road kill! I guess that I would rather eat road kill than some of the things I have seen posted though. Good one!

hmmmm, all the stuff most people listed as strange I have eaten as a matter of course...Conch and sea turtle (grew up in S. Florida) Calamari I eat whenever I can, sushi, sashimi are all part of a normal diet, beefalo, antelope, deer, squirrel, not all that strange I don't think. Saw Palmetto hearts are really good when you are starving! Guess only markyb has had some of the truly strange stuff, waiting to hear from Scotty, XFED, Kirk and Koz though.

I like sometimes to go out into expensive resto. down here where they have a list of "epicurian food" you might wanna try, and so far it was excellent. "Paté" made from alligator tail. And I loved the "veal sweetbread" Cool (glands) to die for .

I have had Deer Jereky before. Also ground bear and bear jerkey. The bear tasted alot better than the deer. I thought the deer had an awful after taste.

But ewww...of all the stories I had to listen to about what my dad ate while in the Navy 30 some odd years ago...monkey brains, chocolate covered ants and bees...gross. But then again he actually likes that kind of stuff...

I've had Shark...tasted like steak!

And Mentos - let me see if I got this right now..Beefalo is an actual ANIMAL? I thought it was just combined meet. But it's a result of cross breeding? Im confused. If it's cross breeding wouldn't it be 1/2 Buffalo and 1/2 Cow???
08-01-03, 09:45 AM
MrsS
I have eaten shark....just did not occur to me as being an exotic food.

08-01-03, 09:57 AM
methos
Yup - It's an actual animal. I assume it arose from cross-breeding. Here's an example of how it could have:

following the buffalo genes:
cow + buffalo -> 1/2 buffalo
1/2 buffalo + cow -> 1/4 buffalo
1/2 buffalo + 1/4 buffalo -> 3/8 buffalo = beefalo

following the cow genes:
cow + buffalo -> 1/2 cow
1/2 cow + cow -> 3/4 cow
1/2 cow + 3/4 cow -> 5/8 cow = beefalo

I'm sure it wasn't as straightforward as all that, but, according to the dictionary, a beefalo is a breed of cattle that is genetically 3/8 buffalo and 5/8 cow.

My father is an avid hunter. As a kid we ate a lot of “not normal” meats Roll Eyes.
I have also traveled to many other countries, and make an attempt to try the local delicacies. In survival school you will eat things you never though you could. To be honest, most of it was not too bad. Big Grin

Some foods that I have eaten: (off the top of my head, not a complete list)

Deer, antelope, gazelle, water buffalo, sable, rabbit, opossum (It ain’t just for Southern folks Wink), raccoon, bear, rats, frogs, raw fish, snails, squid, sharks, octopus, bluefish, clams, seaweed, lizards, alligator, beefalo, fish eggs (not caviar), snakes, eels, turtles, boar, ants (less the chocolate coating), grasshoppers, grubs, earthworms, tree bark, and leaves.

I ADORE calamari and escargo!

I was actually looking into starting
up my own snail farm at one time, and
feeding them like the Romans did with
wines and spices to make them even
MORE yummy!!!

Have also eaten pig's feet!
My Mom used to make them because
my sister was a fan....me, not so
much, but I did eat them.

I think that the people who complain
about calamari - aren't cooking it
right! You cannot over cook or re-heat
it! - turns into rubber.

Poi -bland, silken texture

Sardine"Frames" . Japanese dish. Pleasant, salty crunchy. Baked w soy

Gefilte Fish cold fish dumplings. Looks like albino poop. Mild fish is yum w red beet horseradish

Fried Caterpillar -crunchy, peanut taste. Just the thought makes my throat contract to peanut butter fuzz.

Geoduck Sashimi (Mirugai) - looks like giant clam pizzle. Tastes better than it looks. sweet marine flavor

Fresh Abalone -good barely warmed in a sauce in sauce of swt butter, light
white wine. Sprinkle w fine chopped chives & Ossetra caviar.

Escargot -don't even remind me: snails. Drooling slime.
A taste like rich earth smells. An attractive texture that is a vehicle for garlic, wine, swt butter etc. You must not look at them before trying. The first time I thought my dinner partner was eating eyeballs from sockets.

Raw Clam or Oyster Still strange after all the years except the delicate Kumimoto oyster.

Raw tuna -this is surprisingly good and un-fish like as many of you know

Fried Smelt with face and bones

Smoked Sea Eel, shiverrr, very fishy

Scorpion Fish (Rascasse) -strange looking, good tasting typical ingredient in Bouillabaisse

Sweetbread pancreas or thymus of calf or lamb. Thymus is more delectable. On a bed pf creamed leeks with a truffled Port sauce. TDF.

Beef liver arghh

Lamb's tongue

Sparrows Roasted on Rosemary Skewers. - untrussed abominations with organs, beaks and all

Durian -stink fruit. smells worse than sewer fumes. Tastes better than any fruit.

Natto nasty oozing fermented soybeans, popular in Tokyo

Laver bread is not bread but a kind of seaweed , cooked to go with a full Welsh breakfast. It tastes like , er, seaweed, but is not salty or bitter, though you might expect that.

The Welsh also serve lamb's 'fry', this ( or rather, they !) only found on male lambs. Perhaps not at breakfast if you know what it is !

'Blood pudding' is called 'black pudding' here and is found in the North , where it is another everyday breakfast dish. There is a white version seen mostly in Ireland .

Lawyers describe our legal system as like black pudding :
" It is perfectly all right as seen by the consumer but, if he were to go behind the scenes and see how they did it , he'd never touch it again!" Big Grin

Can someone tell me what Blood pudding is?

08-09-03, 03:48 AM
FredPuli
Grumpybear 'Blood pudding' appears to be the same as our 'black pudding'. In form it's like a sausage, about one and a half inches wide and is served as thick slices. It is made almost entirely from the blood of the animal (cow/ox ) and , unsurprisingly, looks almost black, It is served hot at breakfast.

Anyway, its manufacture looks messy ! Smile

Horsemeat ? Does anybody in the US eat horsemeat ? It is still to be found frequently on the menu in Switzerland, where the preference is for the young animal.

In France you still see butcher's signs for 'chevaline' to indicate this speciality. The meat itself though seems less common than it once was. When I was a student in Paris asking for the steak advertised often meant getting that. You only hsd beef steak for certain if the place said it was 'bifteck'. Just to show how common it was you sometimes saw, confusingly, 'bifteck de cheval' ( horse beefsteak') listed.

Horsemeat tastes sweeter than beef. It is still exported from the UK to France simply because there never was a market for it here.

When I was young I practically lived on spiders. My dad had a big raspberry plot, and my job was to pick them. As all raspberry lovers know, spiders love to hide inside the really ripe ones. Since I ate more raspberries than I picked, I calculate that over the years, I've eaten 1,484,592 spiders of various sorts.

Had a friend that used to live in Mexico. He went back for a visit and brought us back some canned rattlesnake. It sat on the shelf for quite awhile. I looked at it everyday wondering what it would taste like. One day I finally broke down and opened it. It sort of looked like canned salmon, still had the bones and all in the can. I poked my fork in the can and took a tiny bite, bones and all. I have to say if I didnt know it was snake I would never have guessed. It was actually very good. I really dont think it would be something I would actually order in a restaurant, (do they actually serve that stuff?) but at least now if anybody ever tells me it tastes like chicken, I can say, no it tastes like rattlesnake Roll Eyes

Anybody here like Haggis?

Here is the recipe:

Haggis is made from sheep's offal (or pluck). The windpipe, lungs, heart and liver of the sheep are boiled and then minced. This is mixed with beef suet and lightly toasted oatmeal. This mixture is placed inside the sheep's stomach, which is sewn closed. The resulting haggis is traditionally cooked by further boiling (for up to three hours) although the part-cooked haggis can be cooked in the oven which prevents the risk of bursting and spoiling.
Yum, yum.

Here is a Picture to get your mouth watering:

Do I like haggis? Do I like HAGGIS??

Well, yes.

You can even get CANNED haggis now--the FDA frowns on ye olde waye of making the stuff so these folks have come up with a much more palatable solution.
They even have a vegetarian haggis--haven't tried that one, but I CAN definitely recommend the regular version.

They have IRN-BRU, too--mmmmmmmmmmmm

Kangaroo jerky. Horrible
Elk. Very good
Raccoon. Horrible

I recently caught and ate a cownose ray. They look like your typical manta ray, usually about 20-30 lbs. The wings are cut off and punched with a circular cookie cutter. Excellent. As a matter of fact, if you order "scallops" at a restaurant, you're very possibly getting ray, which are commonly referred to around here as "sea scallops".
