We have a Dell 4300S with Win XP OS. If my husband is signed in, and I switch to my user settings, I get these errors when its loading: First I get one telling me my husband is signed in, which I am supposed to get. Then I get one that says "Error c0000005 at address 10016b8". Then it sends an error report to MS because "PromulGate" failed.

What is Promulgate? I searched it, and when I found the file it lookes as if its something that autodownloaded itself to our system. I tried to delete it, but it said it couldn't be deleted because some file couldn't be found. Any information about this would be great - the MS site was (typically) useless and Dell doens't do anything with the software.

Thanks!

promulgate

And another page...

PromulGate Registry (Machine Run) "C:\Program Files\DelFin\PromulGate\PgMonitr.exe"

I found these pages here.

You might give the Lavasoft spyware program a try:

I hope this will be of some help!

I hope yours is a great day!

Information here

This is copy pasted from the link above.

"PromulGate is designed to display advertisements during dial up connection activity."

"Uninstallation could not have been easier. We used the "Add/Remove Programs..." control panel to quickly remove PromulGate.
PromulGate removed all traces of its files, including the desktop shortcut."

The FAQ for Ad-Aware says they're working on a WinXP version, but that people are reporting that the program does run in WinXP.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

You can also try removing the "PgMonitr.exe" (or possibly "pmgmonitr.exe") program file from the "Start-Up".

This page has a picture:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/images/xp_msconfig.gif

You invoke it by clicking:
Start
Run
type
msconfig.exe
Click OK.
Once displayed, click on the "Startup" tab. You will see a list of items and the 2 columns that we're interested in are "Startup Item" (WinXP) and "Command".

Look for the File name: PgMonitr.exe

At this address: C:\Program Files\DelFin\PromulGate\PgMonitr.exe (or pmgmonitr.exe)

Uncheck the item and click "OK". You will be prompted to restart your computer.

This page has all the details about "Start-ups".

I hope this helps!

displacedNYer:

Dwight is right on target about AdAware. It's absolutely outstanding! I run it everytime I signon to the PC (it's my roommate's PC and he seems to collect a large amount of cookies, ads, and spyware). It goes through everything and brings up a list of all the "spyware" for you to delete.

Another great product is AdShield which installs directly into your browser. You right click on whichever ad you don't want and it gives you the complete URL with the most common words highlighted (ads/, colonize/, etc.). You can add the highlighted text to AdShield and you'll never get another ad with those words in them. You can get AdShield here (the download link is toward the bottom):

http://www.adshield.org/

One caveat: I don't recommend importing any extensive, pre-made lists (tried it) of ads as you'll end up getting things blocked that prevent pages from loading properly. My recommendation is to add offending items one at a time. Also, it installs & operates a little differently than most downloaded programs; just some info so you're not suprised as I was.

I got the AdWare, and ran it. 137 secretly downloaded files!!!! Ooohhh!!! That makes me mad. I pay the $1 200 for the computer, and they use it for free advertising!!

I will never never never ever purchase anything that I see in a pop up ad!

Thanks for your help, guys!

Sonnet I am sure I posted this somewhere in the recent past, but AdShield only works with IE.

Is that your understanding?
