At work I downloaded a free demo of GetSmile gifs so that I could have a look at them. Now I can't get rid of them off the computer (which my boss sometimes uses!)

The GetSmile installed on my desktop, and after I'd had a good look at it I deleted it and then deleted it from my recycle bin. When I saw the GetSmile icon was still at the bottom right of my screen, I realised it needed to be "uninstalled". I clicked on Start, then Programmes, then GetSmile and clicked on uninstall. I was told the programme was running and that I needed to exit it. I did this, as instructed by right clicking on the icon and clicking on "exit". The icon didn't disappear from the bottom of my screen as it should have done, so I right clicked again on it. But nothing happened, no menu appeared. I tried again to uninstall, but still got the message that I needed to exit the programme first.

I rebooted and tried again, but the same thing happened. The icon doesn't disappear after I've clicked on "exit" and if I right click on it to try again nothing happens. Is this because I'd deleted it and there is no actual icon on my desk top?

Please help before my boss uses the computer! You can't miss the darn thing as it pops up when you turn on the computer! (If you need to know, it's Windows NT 4.0 WorkStation.)

Thank you in advance.

I'm not familiar with the NT layout but XP is similar so bear with us.
Click the Start Button and look for the Control Panel icon
click this and locate the Add or Remove Program folder
open this and scroll down the list until you see the name of the program you want to delete If it is present click the small button(on the entry) to uninstall the program. If it give a message that some items need to be removed manually it is normally the listing in the Start menu Right click on it and select Delete from the Menu
Last job, click on the Recycle bin to dispose of the traces
Job should take you perhaps a minute tops Wink
Ps Any desktop item you can drag and drop into the Recycle bin They will be linked to nothing after this job. Smile

If a graceful uninstall doesn't work, you may have to tackle uninstallation manually.

You would want to use 'msconfig', remove the startup entry and locate the program files for the application and delete them by hand.

Again, this is IF THE GRACEFUL UNINSTALL DOESN'T WORK!!!

If you still get the message that you need to exit the program first when you try bedstor's method, there may be an intermediate step before resorting to Chris F's method (which I would predict would give you the same error).

Someone who uses NT may want to check me on this, as I'm not sure the commands are the same as XP for this, but in XP, you would -
press ctrl-alt-del
Then you may have to select "task manager"
select the program from the list
press "end task" (it may ask you to confirm)
then try uninstalling again

Can someone who has NT check to be sure the sequence is the same?

Thank you all for trying to help me.

Bedstor, I don't think NT and XP can be that similar as there was no Control Panel icon to be found when I clicked on start.

Chris F, I then tried your way and located the file in the program folder. Unfortunately I still got the same message as when I tried to uninstall via the Start menu. That is what is so annoying about GetSmile (or at the least the one I downloaded) as the icon remained at the bottom of my screen even when I'd clicked on exit.

Methos, when I shut down my computer I got the end task message every time since installing GetSmile. This showed that though I'd exited, it wasn't properly doing so. So I thought your method definitely sounded feasible.

I clicked on press ctrl-alt-del and chose taskmanager. After some looking I realised that I had to click on Process to get the list. I right clicked on GetSmile and clicked on "End Process" in the drop down menu. I got a warning that I could lose saved data etc. but hoped that it only meant data concerned with GetSmile and continued. I then uninstalled in the Start menu and that grinning blue icon disappeared from the bottom of my screen! It worked! I checked in the list of programs and it's no longer there. Big Grin

Thank you again everyone, my job is saved. I have listed all that I did in case anyone with NT gets a similar problem, as I know it is different in many ways to other operating systems.

I found the Control Panel
It is located by clicking the Start button then Settings on the Menu (same as WIN95/98)
I found a page full of diagrams on Microsoft for the NT4 workstation ,which will help you understand where those signs lead to.Worth saving to Favourites ?Smile

As bedstor said, this is the way to remove programs: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Find the program you want to uninstall, click on it and then click on Change/Remove. Follow instructions for uninstalling.

Which is better to use?
Use the programs own uninstaller, if it has one.
Or use the add/remove from the control panel.
Is there a difference?
What has been your experience?
Thank you, MKS

The way I look at the uninstall Program situation is:
1) Check the Start menu list entry for it
2)Not there go to the Add remove Program section
3)Not there I locate the folder on the Hard Drive where the program resides and see if there is an uninstall or Unwise icon?
4)I delete that folder and hope there are no after effects Roll Eyes
4a) I'd use EasyCleaners Add Remove program which OK, it duplicates part of the Windows "Add Remove" Program (but it is more accessible Smile) Also use it to tidy up those links/ registry items that are now dead ends
So that's the order I look at this job
EasyCleaner is available (free ) here: and there is a lot of good things in it(lots of help/tips) and easy to use.A great housekeeping program Cool
