Hi all,
I have here a Dell Dimension 8100 with Win ME and am trying to find a way to stop the "My Documents" folder from opening and displaying on Startup every time. Anyone have any idea why it would do this? I've tried everything I can think of, and cannot get it to stop opening on bootup. Thanks for any and all help and suggestions!

According to the Microsoft website, you should go to Settings-Taskbar and Start Menu. In there should be a Properties tab. According to thier information, in there should be something you can click to choose if My Documents starts at start-up or not (the site is not very specific!)

I hope this helps.

MTT,
I tried your suggestion a moment ago, but there wasnt a corresponding entry to remove My Documents from the startup menu. Any other ideas?

Hrm. I wish it were earlier in the day so I could call my mother--I went straight from 98 to XP, while she had ME for a while and became quite the expert! Its rather different from XP.

Okay, the next article I found suggests if you click and drag My Documents out of the start menu and onto your desktop, it should not autostart anymore.

If this doesn't work, I'm lost! Is there an ME expert in the house??

I cant find any sign of My Documents in the Start menu at all to remove, either by dragging, or by simple removal. I appreciate the suggestions, and I'm at a loss myself. LOL

That's strange why you can't find it under Documents on your start button, I have WinMe and it has it there. Also, have you tried going to Start->Run-> and typing msconfig in the box, then going to the Startup tab and seeing if the my documents is somewhere in there, if so untick the box, and click ok. Will get a warning after restarting that settings have changed but that's ok.
Got a question. Has it always done this?, if not you could go back on system restore.

That is a very good idea providing you have made a restore point? Pick a date of at least a month ago to go back to.Any date which is highlighted is ok to use All the others contain no restore point. Case of trial & error Roll Eyes May have to try 2 or 3 dates?
NOTE- It does not change anything but that file which is faulty.Quite safe Cool

I'm afraid System Restore isnt an option, as its been disabled since I was trying to get rid of the 100 virus infected files that were in that section.

Soaringhorse, I did the msconfig thing, it wasnt there. As far as the Taskbar and Start options, anything there that said Documents, I removed, but its still coming up. I may have to live with it for bit, until I or someone else can figure it out. Thanks to all of you for your help!

As you are savvy with computer files
A very good program for detecting removing these is a tiny program called Hijackthis (183K)
www.tomcoyote.org/hjt (screenshots and info here)It scans the hard drive/s and produces a comprehensive log list
which should list the source and all you have to do to remove is tick the entry (Use caution!)
There are many submitted examples on the special Forum on this Site
www.webuser.co.uk/cgi-bin/forums/postlist.pl?Cat=&Board=hijackthis
to the experts to sort out (not for the average user)
If you want, register and submit your log here and ask these people? Roll Eyes

bedstor,
I have that program on my Main pc, so I'll try that on the Dell when I get it back here again, it went back to a friend of mine yesterday, as he needed it for his daily internet activities. He'll bring it back to me if I ask, so I may do that tomorrow. Thanks for the idea, I hadnt thought to try that program to see if it would come up with something that could help.

On the other site it's used with a high success rate when the Malware removers or normal deletes are impossible to use Cool

I used ME for some time, and appeared here with questions until 'jammas advised me to switch to XP. I fought him for a long time, then gave up and switched. ME is a lousy program, it has more built-in errors than the government budget. My nephew worked checking code for MS for some time, and he said ME was the worst program MS ever produced. XP is MUCH more stable. I'd advise an upgrade. I haven't had nearly as many problems with XP.
