Hi people, I'm about to upgrade my backup pc from win95 to win98se here shortly, and was wondering if there were any suggestions as to procedures or tricks that I should know about? Anyone find a method that works better than the established ones? I have printed out a set of instructions off the net to guide me, and have several tech books to go by too. Anyway, the old pc is a Pentium 133 mhz, 32 MB RAM, 6 gig hd. I have ordered a stick of 64 MB ram for it, (pc100), which should be here in a week or so, just in time for me to put it in, and take the pc to my sis, who I'm going to give it to. She just wants one for email, and light web surfing, so I figured this one would work for that, especially if she can get it hooked up to a cable connection. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have!

Hi Chris, when I passed on my old PC I performed a clean install of wi98se. Formatted the H/D and installed from the CD, nice clean H/D with only win98se installed.
redder, Thats what I was leaning toward, there's not anything on that pc that I cant put back on it, so I shouldnt lose anything by doing the clean install. Thanks for the answer!

U need at least 128mb for WIN-98 or 98SE to run smoothly! Otherwise it's too slow! And PC100 means 100mhz Front Side Bus which has to match the Processor! Pentium2-350 was the first to use the 100mhz FSB! Anything below like a 133 won't be compadible! It must be EDO-72PIN 5.V if I'm not mistaken! Where did U get the ram from?

I agree with ivnj about the RAM. I have seen a few older motherboards that use SDRAM (168 pin), but most use the 72 pin EDO as he stated. If your board will accept the SDRAM, however, PC100 is backward compatible and will work in a 66mhz system. Crucial.com has a tutorial that will advise you of the type of RAM you need. I think 64mb of ram will suit your purpose, but certainly agree with the 128mb recommendation.

This motherboard does have one SDRAM slot on it, which is why I was going to use the 64MB SDRAM stick. This computer I'm using had 64 MB in it when I first got it new, so it should serve my sis' purposes well, she wasnt planning on doing anything complicated, just email , and light websurfing. If she should happen to get a newer model, I'll just take the old one back, haha! ivnj, I am getting the RAM from a website I've mentioned on here before www.computersurplusoutlet.com, for $12, which was one of the best prices I found, plus I've had no problems to speak of from their memory before. I plan on removing the old EDO sticks, and saving them when I put the SDRAM in. If my sis was planning on putting heavy demands on this pc, I would definitely get her a better one to do it with, and since she may be able to get a cable connection(the 133 pc has a network card in it already), that could help her alot. Thanks for the input people!
