The new MSN Messenger 6.0 Beta was just released, and boy, howdy, is it improved! Awesome features - there are 59 pages of backgrounds, 113 pages of avatars and 90 pages of emoticons (all with 12 items per page). You can even use your own background or avatar, and add emoticons from your own private stash.
Cool. One thing though, now I have two msn icons on my task bar. How can I delete it( the old one)? All I see in my add/remove list is msn 6.0. Thanks. N2
When I installed the new version, it over-wrote the old one and my 5.0 icons were disabled. I just deleted them.
If you've got two icons on your desktop, one of them may be for Windows Messenger (if you're running WinXP). It won't hurt anything to delete it...you can always send another copy, to your desktop, by right clicking on the icon, in Programs, and selecting Send to... > Desktop (create a short-cut).

Thanks Sonnet. I figured out that one was windows messenger after I posted the questions. I must of had to do a restart before it took the windows messenger off the task bar, as it is not there today. Don't think I am too wild about the screen popping up for me to sign in though. Have to check out the program a little more. Thanks again. N2
MSN Messenger 6 didn't seem very amazing to me. It seemed to mimic many of the features that AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo have had for years. Apparently R&D (research and development) has turned into S&C (steal and copy).
In other IM news... A new version of ICQ Lite has been released. ICQ Lite is now able to communicate with AIM users! http://www.icq.com/download/

ever since upgrading to 6.0, messanger freezes every single time i try to start it, if it hasnt been running since i turned on the computer.
i DO NOT have it set to automatically sign in when i turn on the computer, as i rarely use it and find it annoying. if i do want to use it after being on for an hour or so, i click the icon in the icon tray, and it sits there for a few minutes then gets the 'this program is not responding' error. i end task, and restart it from start. it works fine if i do that.
In "computerese" BETA means "test". A program in BETA is still in the development stage and the developers are looking for people to test their program. The program will very likely contain "bugs" that have to be worked out.
I make it a policy never to run BETA programs on my normal computer because these bugs can sometimes cause total system failure.
I did run the MSN Messenger 6.0 BETA on a backup system and I did have problems with lockups, both in the Messenger program and with other applications as well. I uninstalled the Messenger BETA program and the problems went away.
