I have a 70 MB Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that I need to bring to another computer. I don't have a burner, and I don't have a web-based storage account that holds over 70 MB (and I don't know where I would get one for free).
Is there any other option that I have than using that "Pack and Go" wizard and exhausting my supply of the last 20 floppy disks in the house? (Oh, and bringing my PC to history class is out of the question. )
FYI: This presentation is for Friday, January 17th. I have a week to figure it out, but I would appreciate anyone's ideas. Thanks! ************************************************** 01-09-03, 10:49 PM ivnj Fisrt of all, maybe don't make the presentation so long! Second of all, if U must and have no room for a burner or external ZIP drive try
ivnj ************************************************** 01-11-03, 11:05 AM MkStfnz ivnj, I cannot shorten the length of my presentation, unfortunately. The models, diagrams, pictures, etc. need to be included, although they do take up the majority of the 70 MB.
Also, I was hoping someone might have an idea that did not involve me purchasing anything (burner, zip drive, web space, etc.).
Thanks for trying. ************************************************** 01-11-03, 02:38 PM ivnj But 44 and free shipping is not bad cuz USB will be qround for a while and that will be used a countless number of times down the road! And it's so tiny it will slip into your pocket! Well worth the price! Of course there's always http://www.freeyellow.com for free space but that's only 50mb! The other device is well worth it if there's no room for a burner which s only $50 at CompUSA!
ivnj ************************************************** 01-11-03, 03:17 PM Byter Hi Mike: I think that can be done with a "DIAL UP NETWORK (DUN)" if both computers have a modum and a telephone connection.
Years ago my friend up the street and I would send files back and fourth between our two computers, but I can't remember how we did this. I don't remember if we used Hyper Terminal or what. Confused
Hopefully one of the real GURUS knows how this is done.
Best of luck Mike b. (AKA Byter) ************************************************** 01-11-03, 03:33 PM ivnj U mean Telnet? But the main system still has to have a server or place to download the things to or tap into! Or some schools or colleges have a little space like 50mb for where U can download your things and post/publish stuff! But I only have 50 and 70 is needed here! So the pen drive is not bad for 44 + free shipping!
ivnj ************************************************** 01-11-03, 05:30 PM Byter Just remembered: We were using a program called ProCommPlus Test Drive. With this you can set one computer as "HOST" and have the other computer dial in. Once the two computers are connected you can transfer files and watch as the other person types at their computer. (Much like a chat room)
This thing is an old DOS program; (No mouse support, all control is through the keyboard) This is the way it was done by us old geezers before the internet. Eek
If you'ed like to try it I've put the whole package into a 'ZIP file and placed it on my site.
I know there must be something newer & better but I can't seem to find it.
Read the manual that comes with it, It should tell all you need to know. If you need more help post back here or E-Mail me.
Best of luck again Mike b. (AKA Byter)
PS Just went and tried the link and it works, you might want to set up an empty folder somewhere and download to it then unzip to the same folder.
PPSS As you can see the whole ZIP file is only a little over 500K so you can transport on only one floppy. Big Grin

[This message was edited by Byter on 01-11-03 at 05:43 PM.] ************************************************** 01-11-03, 07:46 PM MkStfnz Thank you so much for the suggestion, Byter. Do you know if this will go from a computer with RoadRunner to a computer on a network?
01-11-03, 10:03 PM Byter I've had no experiance with roadrunner so I couldn't say.
I've been playing with that Procomm+ and I'd forgotten how USER UNFRIENDLY that thing is. (Or more likely how spoiled I am now)
Hopefully someone else knows of a better COMM. program.
Mike b. (AKA Byter) ************************************************** 01-12-03, 10:29 AM methos Question: are the diagrams and figures in the presentation powerpoint and excel ojects, or pictures? If you won't need to edit them, you can save a lot of memmory by converting them to pictures. ************************************************** 01-12-03, 06:09 PM MkStfnz Unfortunately, they are already pictures. ************************************************** 01-12-03, 06:40 PM MkStfnz I thought of a way that just might work. I will try to use the file transfer option on AOL Instant Messenger from my computer to the school computer that I want to use. Cool
I'll let everyone know if it works. (Cross your fingers!) ************************************************** 01-12-03, 08:15 PM ivnj But FTP to what! U can't just ftp straight to the computer! U need an addres or some kind of server to ftp to! U can't just ftp to C: !
Both computers have AOL Instant Messenger on them. It seems to be working so far, as both computers are doing it right now. Thanks for all of your suggestions. ************************************************** 01-13-03, 06:15 PM ivnj When did AIM start allowing FTP! Is that in some new version they have?
ivnj ************************************************** 01-14-03, 07:49 AM methos It's been there for a few years at least. ************************************************** 01-14-03, 12:48 PM Byter Let us know how that worked, M... I'm sure this is a "Tip/Trick" that many could use. Big Grin
Mike ************************************************** 01-14-03, 02:18 PM MkStfnz It worked great! It took about 45 minutes, but other than the time, it worked very effectively. Thanks for all of your help, Byter, methos5000, and ivnj! ************************************************** 01-14-03, 03:05 PM Dwight MkStfnz, that is a neat trick. Thank you for letting us know that it worked. Dwight ************************************************** 01-14-03, 03:53 PM Byter Ditto to Dwight's post.
One additional thing you didn't mention. Did you ZIP this presentation before you sent it ?
Depending on the content, a good compression program like WINZIP can reduce file size by 50% or more.
Something to think about if you need to send any more files this HUGE !
Way to go Mike Mike b. (AKA Byter) ************************************************** 01-14-03, 09:59 PM MkStfnz Bringing My PowerPoint Presentation to Another Computer Unfortunately, I don't have a zip drive.
Thanks, Byter. ************************************************** 01-14-03, 10:13 PM ivnj He wasn't talking about a piece of hardware zip drive! He was talking abouta piece of software!
ivnj ************************************************** 01-15-03, 05:47 AM MkStfnz Oh, I see.
I don't have that program on my computer. Maybe I can go to Download.com and see if a free version exists.
Thanks, ivnj. ************************************************** 01-15-03, 08:36 AM Byter Sorry I was a little vague there. The program I've been using to compress/decompress is ZIPCENTRAL.
I dropped using Winzip when they started asking for Money. Eek Mad
Prior to that I was using PKWare's PKZIP until I found they had added SPYWARE to their Product. (DOUBLE Mad Mad)
If you have any questions about Compression programs start another thread and we should get more info from everyone.
Mike b (AKA Byter) ************************************************** 01-15-03, 06:15 PM MkStfnz That is a great compression program. It really brought my file size down considerably. Thanks, Byter. ************************************************** 01-15-03, 08:16 PM ivnj There is a free version! It's called an evaluation version! Works for ever! I've never paid yet! Same link or go here and wait 5 seconds!
