To look at it from the other side, Tree, I've never used Word, but I am a long-time WordPerfect user. I currently use WP8 for Windows, and can open Word 6.0 or 7.0 documents straight into WordPerfect where they translate themselves into WordPerfect format.
I can also save documents written in WordPerfect as Word 6.0/7.0, and they can be read without problem by users of Word. I've passed WordPerfect files to Word users when co-operating on producing a Family History Society quarterly journal.
WP8 is old stuff now. I'm sure later versions will read/write later versions of Word also.
Graphics can be a problem, as WordPerfect has its own graphics format (.WPG) and a .BMP format of its own. You just have to be sure to save graphics as generic .BMP or a common format such as .JPG or .TIF. WordPerfect offers plenty to choose from.
