I've been using MSWord 97 SR-1 software for years. But somehow I turned on the non-printing character display and I can't turn it off and it makes reading text most annoying.

Can anyone tell me how to turn it off?

(By non-printing character I mean for example that weird-looking double-barred reversed P that indicates that a carriage return has been entered into the text.)

On your toolbar on the top, there should be that same paragraph mark...if you click on that, it will go away. If it is not there, you should have a small arrow pointing downwards (somewhere in the area on the toolbar) that when clicked on, will allow you to add or remove buttons...click there and you should see the paragraph sign again, click on it to add it to your toolbar.

I'm not using '97, but it should be the same.

Thank you, Lydia! Worked like a charm. I have a 143-page file I need to read on screen, so you cannot imagine how glad I am that you were able to solve the problem. Smile
