If you are running XP, Microsoft are releasing a vital free upgrade next month which will address many security issues, and alter some running settings regarding spyware issues. So if this is only update to run this year on your computer do it ASAP! Applies to all XP versions. Fine Details (on the links)here, off a posting (edited )I did to a UK computer site.
quote: Microsoft are releasing XP Service Pack 2 in August www.vnunet.com/news/1156611 Can any of the staff tell us if the cd is going to be attached to any of the Magazines by this Publisher? From what it says, it is an 80 Meg download off the MS Update site. OK for BB users. But for dial up users it is going to take half a day minimum! So the inclusion of this Important upgrade will be a big help
And will the magazine be publishing an article on what is contained inside this update?
Some details of what is contained in it are in this earlier article on the Beta release in June www.vnunet.com/news/1156196
Footnote: Some people are still trying to find SP1 patches on that site as I'm posting this The new SP2 version will I imagine address those issues and add several dozen other updates and fixes ,So the wait for a few weeks maybe worthwhile

I hate service packs. I absolutely hate them. Microsoft tends to introduce some new obtrusive technology in them, nearly every release. They happen to "forget" to mention anything about it, too.
The idea of batched updates is great, for those people who aren't either competent, or responsible enough to keep their machines upgraded. I just don't like the way Microsoft handles it.
I'm a little concerned about this SP2 a friend told me about it and also said it would screw a lot of my things on the computer up - can Bedstor tell me if this is the case?
I think the Rumour mill has been working overtime again It is a big "Fix it"on lots of bugs and general improvements elsewhere,in the Security area. Majority of us won't notice any difference bar in the version number and a minor reorganisation of controls BTW The Version that Better than 95% of us are running now is SP1 which is the last upgrade.Heard nobody moaning about that They just accepted it I expect the next thing will be the next version of Internet Explorer (6.5 or 7.0?) They moan away, but within several months they all have it and not a peep out of them PS The last Moan about Software was the coming Of Gmail on Google and its security "issues" now everybody wants Gmail, but it's only out to a limited selection of people,Can sign up to be first in line for the full release (which I think will be very soon)I'm using it now and its quite good (very easy to work for the beginner ) Here is an info page, www.google.com/gmail/help/about.html#interest Input your e-mail in the box at the bottom for a post when the site goes "Full time"

Incidentally, I recently downloaded the google toolbar and it really blocks a lot of spam. I downloaded it 3 days ago and it has block 91, I'm pretty pleased about that. Wish I could get rid of all the junk mail which comes into my Outlook daily and indeed hourly though!

"Accepting" it, I don't think is the case. Most of the "moaning" is by people who dislike where the consumer desktop is going, like me for instance. Technology like DRM, on-demand licensing and much of the technology adopted into these big "fix its" (yes, service packs do contain a plethora of useful updates) are just plain wrong. No one moaned about SP1? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I'm pretty sure that was the "mandatory" inception of DRM and on-demand licensing. (Before, it was an optional update.) There are still many users not using SP1 machines for that reason. You can get all of the mandatory security updates individually (much more inconvenient, but this way you still have some privacy...).
Microsoft Windows is detrimental to the further development of computing. But... blah. I could go on for days.
