Sigh.
Catty's problems continue. In Word there is apparently something called a template, which comes with 1,000 (at least) questions such as "Changes have been made to the template. Do you want to save them?" The choices are "Yes," "No" and "Cancel." I have pressed each of these at least 100 times (so it seems), but every time I type on the screen and try to save, I have to go through the same routine. Is there any way to disable or detonate the ^*&%# thing?

Give this a try & see if it helps:

When you go to SAVE, click "File/Save as"
In the "Save As" Dialog box give you document a name
in the "File Name" box.
Then in the "Save as Type" box select "Word Document (*.doc)"

Previously it seems that Word is trying to save you letter as an
updated template.

Thank you very much, byter dear. I tried that, and it did work, but I used a file that had already been saved ("save as") a Word document. Perhaps it's only with new saves that this happens. I'll be giving it a try later today with a new file and we'll see what happens.
