I have a windows 98 operating system make dell model optiplex GX100 Intel(r)celeron(tm)processor. When I turn on my computer I get a black screen for a few seconds that says. Warning! cover was previously removed. Then it starts loading. Why? Does it mean my warranty is no longer any good because I installed my own burner? How can do away with this it's very distracting. Hope someone can help me. Thank you!

Howdy:

If you read the fine print in the warranty for your system, you will find that you have probably voided it by opening the case..

You can't get rid of the message.. An authorized Dell dealership probably could as they are the ONLY people allowed inside the system while it is still under warranty..

Might as well take it in and have them disable it as your warranty is toast now anyway !!

If you could find the trigger that was connected to the cover, you could wire around it and complete the circuit, tricking the machine into thinking the cover hasn't been removed, but this is just to get rid of the message. It won't fool anybody on warranty claims.
It seems a little odd that they still have such a warranty policy these days, seeing as users very commonly install extra devices themselves.

It's not as sinister as it sounds. No warranty is voided or anything. What you are seeing is a security-related message telling you that someone may have messed around with the hardware since the last time you used your computer. Good to know, in the event a co-worked or evil-doer snuck something into your machine, or perhaps swapped out your expensive video card for a cheap one.

If you see the message over and over, and there's no way the case has actually been opened over and over, then perhaps the case has not been closed properly. Or, the switch that senses an open case is damaged or bumped out of alignment.
