according to Microsoft you can only get the new service pack 2 for windows xp through auto updates, i have my setting to receive new updates everyday but still no service pack 2, and it is impossible to email microsoft for any answers, any suggestions helpful. Thanks *************************************************** 08-22-04, 09:12 PM ivnj I was wonering that my self. But every article I read says they pushed the date to fall now. End of this month or September.
As far as I know a final version is not even available yet.
ivnj *************************************************** 08-22-04, 09:18 PM Di I'm getting a window above the taskbar telling me the SP2 service pack update is now ready to download every time I log on. I'm holding off for a month or so to give them time to 'work out any kinks' they may end up finding.
Evidentally Microsoft is scattering the update offering! *************************************************** 08-30-04, 01:59 AM ivnj Cool, I just got the offer.
ivnj *************************************************** 08-30-04, 09:19 AM Tree I updated to SP2 and find that it's a bit intrusive! I emailed a bunch of gifs to myself and then it said that it was too dangerous and would not let me receive them. Thankfully, I could still access them in my "Sent" folder.
It certainly has beefed up security! Roll Eyes *************************************************** 08-30-04, 11:52 AM DvdGStwrt I DO NOT do Auto updates. I have found that when they are set up for Automatic updating the damn things want to upload when I am in the middle of something important or that I get things I do not want or that really mess up the computer.
Since this the only way one can get the SP2, I have decided to not pursue the issue, but I have been looking into alternatives to Windows and Explorer. If I could find a really great interface to replace Windows. I would go with it in a heart beat.
I already use Mozilla for most of my internet needs. Unfortunately not all sites accept Mozilla.
I also use Ghost, a browser that directs my connection through various servers thus my connection to a particular site will be through several servers, my location (ip address) will be lost to the connected site. It also has a few other "hacker" options which may be boarder-line illegal in some instances.
I find that with both of these alternatives, the amount of Spyware and Adware are far lower than just using Explorer. Makes one go hm. *************************************************** 08-30-04, 04:00 PM Ewood27 David, I got SP2 to my computer without automatic updating. Go to Control Panel and in the left pane select Windows update. There's a "Custom Install" option which allows you to look at the updates available and select which to install.
I've found that SP2 fills about 2Gb of space on my hard disk, slows down the boot-up procedure - and took a great deal more than the 30-odd minutes Microsoft said to download and install. *************************************************** 09-01-04, 12:24 PM DvdGStwrt 2 GB of space? Well then - NO WAY.
I do not use the computer to pass on banking information, 2 GB of storage is way to big for a program error fix.
Besides which, since Microsoft changed their update bpage, I get nothing but the bar and an endless wait no matter which option I choose.
Since I am on Broadband I am used to no wait - I gave the update page a full hour (until the screen saver came on) to do something.
Obviously I don't need any mor updates from Windows company of horrors.
David *************************************************** 09-01-04, 05:45 PM Ewood27 It may not be as much as 2GB, but it's in that direction. The used space on my hard disk used to be 6.something GB, now it's 8.20. All I've added is a few .jpg images from my digital camera.
A lot of that extra stuff may be automatic backups or things like that. I just let the update go ahead without custom-selecting anything. *************************************************** 09-02-04, 03:57 AM Ewood27 Wouldn't you know it? The ink was hardly dry on my post above when the latest Langalist popped onto my system, with this snippet:
A number of readers who use dial-up connections are concerned about the size of XP SP2, which can range from something around 70-ish MB to well over 200MB, depending on what you needs and/or choose.
To its credit, Microsoft is offering a free CD--- MS even pays shipping and handling. There also are no license restrictions on the CD: You may freely copy it, share it, borrow it from someone else, whatever.
Here's one reader who found and ordered the CD:
In case you do not yet know about it, the SP2 CD can be ordered from Microsoft. http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=914701 I have not yet loaded SP2 on your advice. I have ordered the CD and will install when I am ready. Auto Updates are off. --- Terence Lee
Getting the patch on CD actually can be handy for everyone: If you ever need to reinstall your OS from scratch, loading from CD is fast, convenient, and doesn't require that you have any network connection at all. It's worth having, if only as a "just in case" tool. *************************************************** 09-02-04, 09:08 AM vansrme I have ordered the CD myself, but wasnt aware that people here didnt know it was available to order, or I would have posted about it, sorry!
chris *************************************************** 09-04-04, 03:51 PM Di I'm still holding off downloading SP2. Just found another optional download in Windows Update - SP3 which is supposed to correct the kinks in SP2. Think I'll continue to wait, knowing Microsoft there are bound to be more glitches! *************************************************** 09-04-04, 05:00 PM bedstor

Microsoft are giving away free Cds with the Download on them, and Computer Mags will have it on their coverdisks shortly... Ps If you are an AOL subscriber they are advising not to upgrade yet as there are issues with the AOL software. Frown Be a few weeks on this Roll Eyes Latest update on the situation is on the Help page (F1) *************************************************** 09-04-04, 11:55 PM vansrme "Ps If you are an AOL subscriber they are advising not to upgrade yet as there are issues with the AOL software. To me, and this just my opinion, that would be a red flag about AOL. I've had it ONCE, and did not like it at all. It took up too many resources, and was not compatible with certain things on that old pc I had. Of course, thats been about 5 years ago, so they could have gotten better, but after reading some of the posts about it, I'll continue to leave it alone, even if they get a local access number in this area. Ok, my ranting is over, LOL.
chris *************************************************** 09-05-04, 01:46 AM Di Hi Bedstor, No, I'm not an AOL user but have read that SP2 is incompatible with so many programs I'm a bit leery of it until hopefully all the problems have been worked out. And yes, I am going to order the disk as I am on dial-up and know I'd lose my connection before the download was completed. *************************************************** 09-05-04, 12:30 PM bedstor I am Not going to download this should AOL issue a "patched" version? Have seen some "misload" stories on other forums Frown(which made me make my mind up) I did order it off Microsoft Last night. they say its about a months delivery, so I'll have at least a official CD instead of a 3rd party cover disk version ready to install soon as AOL give the "All clear" Smile Here is the correct link to get the free CD Wink
Chris the Latest AOL version (9) Is quite Good The resources Issue is not there any more after AOL 7 which was a total rebuild as is Version 9 (to handle Broadband) Only AOL related program still with Chronic Bloat is ICQ Mad(Like filling the computer with Lead! Eek),Use the AIM instead *************************************************** 09-09-04, 08:58 PM dodgecity HehHeh i got that dang spc2 or what ever you want to call it . i had a lot of problems with it (games not working and the such ) so i removed it and now everything is back to normal what ever normal is heh heh. i sugest that you all wait a while till billy bob gets his thumb out of his you know what. till then no install for me. have fun.keep those firewalls good and tight. just the way i like umm heh heh Big Grin *************************************************** 09-13-04, 12:56 AM ivnj Works fine for me.
ivnj *************************************************** 09-13-04, 08:44 AM vansrme bedstor, Glad to hear AOL has made improvements, LOL. I still dont want any part of it due to other reasons, but if its working, I applaud it! Smile
