You can open the History section by pressing the Ctrl + H keys. That will give you quick access to all pages visited "Today" or as many as you have set in your Internet Options / General Tab / History selection box.
I don't know of a way of increasing the number of "backs" and "forwards" that you can use. Here is a "work-around" that I frequently use:
When you have reached a page that you wish to come back to, and you are near your limit, you can right click on a link and choose "Open in new window". This opens that hyperlinked page in a new Internet Explorer window session, giving you a new set of 9 pages for the back / forward buttons.
You can also use the Ctrl + N key to open a new window at the same page. Then navigate using that page. You can go back to the original I.E. window and use the back / forward pages there.
I hope something here will help!

Thanks for answering, Dwight. I sometimes use the History pane, but it's all about convenience -- that pane is a pain. However your other suggestions about opening a new window are perfect -- I forgot that there's a keyboard shortcut.
It seems that sometimes I'm in the middle of reading an article or something, and I digress to use Google or Merriam-Webster's dictionary (warning: shameless plugs for AP's sponsors), then by the time I'm ready to return I can't reach my original page anymore with one click.
I'd organize an angry mob, complete with torches and pitchforks, to assault Microsoft headquarters until they lengthen the IE Back list. But we'd doubtless have to wait in line behind millions of other angry mobs ahead of us.
