My company is interested in obtaining some sort of software that is essentially a database to control and maintain inventory and track job completion. The projects come into contact with as many as 10 departments.

My question is, can anyone steer me in the right direction in order to search for such software or solutions?

I would appreciate any input. ~Thanks!

I'm not an expert in databases, but Microsoft Access is the database component of the Microsoft Office suite (you might have to pay extra for it).

It's not necessarily the best product or the most suitable for your company's needs, but it is industry-standard and has lots of 3rd-party books and online support for developers. With Access you don't have to be a programmer to set up a database system, but it helps. If your business needs are typical -- not too unusual -- many products will probably do fine "right out of the box."

My experience with relational database development suggests that you should spend plenty of time designing your tables before going further.

www.dbforums.com is a database developer's forum. You'll find other sites specific to the software product you choose.

You could also try Borland Paradox which, not having all the bells & whistles of Oracle's excellent software, is, I think, more user-friendly (I did a diploma & work in database design & use).
