This is a handy time saver for you (especially for Novices) . Run this tiny (Beta)Program (104k) which will scan your computer and tells if you are in need of an Update (not spyware) then you are shown a list from the Filehippo site (to match your programs) so you can download it with confidence Smile

www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/

quote:
What is it?
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to filehippo.com to see if there are any newer releases. These are then neatly displayed in your browser for you to download.

quote:
What are the requirements?
The Update Checker works on any Windows PC running Vista, XP, 2003, 2000 or 98.
It requires that the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is installed, which you may download directly from filehippo.com/download_dotnet_framework_2.

Might be able to put it on a USB stick and use it on your friends computer?
quote:
Note: The application does not require installation and may be run directly from the desktop or download folder.
<<< worth an experiment?

I just tried to run the update checker, and I'm getting a message that says the updater is not working. Windows could not find a solution to the problem. Is anyone else getting this???

I assume that you have installed this program beforehand?
quote:
It requires that the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is installed, which you may download directly from www.filehippo.com/download_dotnet_framework_2.

And do what I did, put the Update Checker Program in a folder and Label it so you won't lose it and remember it opens but does not install It uses the Framework program to collate the data then it gives the website a call The website in turn transmits the information to the site server which matches the data replies and its displayed on the page

I Suggest a reload of both programs. Could be that the Framework program has glitched?
Rare but it happens Frown

Bedstor, I know you posted this link some time ago. Since then I have tried downloading the update checker twice, but keep getting this message:

"Registered JIT debugger not available. An attempt to launch a JIT debugger with the folloring command resulted in an error code of Ox2(2)."

Does this make any sense to you?

Sigh. It appears that this program is defunct, bedstor. I have downloaded it but when I try to open it, I get the old "Windows doesn't know what program created it, does not recognize the file," etc., message. Sorry.

That's getting Tiresome Frown

Are you downloading the file then running it?or Just downloading it Saving it in a Folder then running it later?

I have got in the Habit of doing the Latter(still got the program file for later)

Follow these instructions and You might avoid seeing that message Next Time around

Step 1 Open The Start menu and Open your My Documents folder

Step 2 Make a New Folder. Title it With something you'l easily find Mine is called "Saved Downloads & Backups" Not very Imaginative! Red Face
Step 4 (Jump to next step in future) Uninstall that Microsoft .NET Framework programOK
Note all this can be done offline

Now go online
Step 5 Go back to the Filehippo site and Prepare to download the File
IMPORTANT CHANGE

When the message comes up offering to SAVE or RUN click SAVE then a Window will open up. On that Window scroll Down the list Until you see the My documents Link click that and you will be able to see your "NEW" Download save Folder
Click on that to open it then press the OK Button to fix the Downloads destination

Easy from Now
Step 6 Click The Save button again on the Download message and the File will be put in that folder
Windows Will always Route the Downloads to the same selected folder in Future (Unless you delete that folder Roll Eyes)
So Step 5 is redundant in future Just click Save and the Folder is selected automatically 9 out of 10 times in future Keeps everything tidy Wink
Now the Acid Test
Unpacking and running the Program
Have 3 ways 1) Clicking on the Program to start the Install Which most people do

But you can also try right clicking and Choosing "Open" or "Run As.."Which I think is your Bugbear ! Frown

So the Choice is Clicking on The Folder or Selecting Open off the Menu to start the Install process

Reason why you get the Message is possibly you are getting a Misinstall Roll Eyes

Hope one of these Workarounds works for you Smile

My goodness, bedstor, thank you for all that. I will follow your instructions carefully, and let you know what happens.

I don't know, maybe I'm tool old for this stuff. My short-term memory loss really gets in the way.

Thanks again for explaining so clearly.

Oh dear. I followed your instructions exactly - a simple process, really - but when I clicked on the file to open it, I got a message saying "The application failed to initialize properly. Click OK to terminate."

This is quickly becoming more trouble than it's worth, for both of us! My computer needs a lot of work - I'll be glad when Dwight is well!

Thank you for all your efforts to help, bedstor dear. Let's move on to something else.

God bless.
