Is paying by the minute for internet access common? I was under the impression that the vast majority of dial-up services charged a monthly fee.

Yes, but what about the phone charges? It's not free here and even with a pack I was spending up to 30 sometimes. If it was free and the lines were never bussy everybody would be in. Cuz then speed would be the only issue. ivnj

I don't pay any more for phone service if I talk 24/7 than I do if I never actually use it (assuming that it isn't a long-distance call). I have lived in areas where it was possible to get local phone plans that didn't have unlimited calling, but even those charged by the number of calls, not the duration of calls. I'm just surprised thjat this is an issue for many people, as most people seem to have unlimitted local calls and most ISPs (in my experience) charge a monthly fee instead of by the minute.

Most people don't have unlimited calls. And none my lines weren't dialable. Too much interferance. The Ameritech guy even installed an RJ-45 jack instead of an RJ-11. How, I don't know. Anyway, I was paying 20 for the ISP + 17 for a new line so I didn't tie up the old one. So 37 and only 10 for calls left and I'd have Cable. ivnj
