The other day I found I was unable to play any DVD films on this Computer, either in Realplayer or Windows Media Player. Updated them to the Latest versions and No change
So I put a query out on another forum asking about this issue and the reply was have to have certain plug-ins called
codecs and was given several to try out
Result Nix ,Nowt

Went back to the topic to report what happened and an infrequent Poster said try
VLC Media Player its freeware No signup and It Plays all sorts of Media Files
It does link to Windows Media Player (Not Realplayer) and you can use it with Windows 98 and Vista.
It is Open source software (and Totally free no spyware/ads)Download is about 9 MB
And All you see when you open the Program is a Small toolbar on the Desktop (Very tidy) and as soon as a disk is detected it will open a small menu to see if you want to proceed
And It does not barge in if Windows Media Player has seen it too Has to be opened first OK
Here is My reply to the people who showed me this(and Show more of what I found)
quote:
Am now viewing my films again I am using the VLC Media player which as ***** says does what it says. with no Bother
It has a minimal "Toolbar "interface but lots of things on the Menus including a quite good equaliser sound setup section ...Most of the Menus are beyond me But the basic controls are easy to work and I have seen plenty of "Reset to default" buttons should you get in a mess
I have been playing Region 1 ,2 (aka.II(a)) and 3 .Still got to try a Region 4 Disk
Is a bit slow to find(and read) some disks But I think we have about an 8/10 Success rate
Have noted there is no Region Lock on this Program which several other 3rd Party media players have.
This means that after so many switches the Region on the last disk is the Only region that can be played
And you may be able to restore it only by an uninstall /reinstall? If not Install another player
Only interface that needs work (in a future version) is the Keyboard functions Found I could slow down the Video yet the speed up key did not work (not many Slo-Mo steps!)
I'm going to give this a mark of 8/10. Would have been a 9 but for the Keyboard Issues and the " way too Much" settings. which are beyond the average user. Why don't they lock them in a "More advanced settings" menu?
Visuals/ motion are 100% (on full screen) Sound is 100%
www.videolan.org/vlc/ Who Knows Cattys Music Files may be Playable with this Player?

Does not interfere with the other players Install it and call on it if you can't play it on your Normal player
