I've been running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 for years. In the last few months, instead of an occasional notification of system updates requiring a restart -- maybe once every few weeks -- now I get the notification every time I reboot.
The notification appears in the system tray, as a yellow shield containing an exclamation mark. Clicking it opens a window whose title is 'Automatic Updates', showing a Windows logo and a message that says, 'Windows found 1 update' along with a choice for express or custom install. I dutifully choose the express option.
This isn't funny anymore -- there can't be that many updates! How do I fix this annoying condition? (No sledge hammers or explosives, please ).

Professor, MS always issue Their Updates on the 2nd Tuesday of the Month called "Patch Tuesday" And sometimes 1 out of sequence these are emergency Patches Hope that clarifies matters There are others like SP3 for XP which you can pass on. Has some issues if downloaded onto a AMD processor machine (as I have) Because of this the yellow Update shield has been showing for many months So long as you don't click on the shield the download won't start OK?
