If you are planning on buying the New Windows 7 Operating System
I'd open your piggy bank NOW! Microsoft are selling it Now at rock bottom Prices (Pre order) via Amazon and their own Shop
this offer is Only good till the for another 2 weeks. Then the Price Doubles and they are not coming down! Even retailers will be Pitching at the same Price!....No Win situation Mad

The Disk will be mailed out in time For Launch day October 22nd (and the Money will be taken from your bank account at the same time)

NOTE There is currently a Limit of 3 copies Per order

There are 3 Versions on Offer And do look up the Prices what they will be on launch day if you miss out...and you'll need the smelling salts
They are Home Premium ,Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate

First off Ultimate is a Kings Ransom and a Glorified Entertainments Package

I think it will be the Professional Edition that is the best buy with XP Mode and easy networking setup that the canny people will opt for
This is $99.99 in the US but £99.99 in the UK (Minus Internet Explorer) Confused Go figure!
This will be $198.98 post pre-order sale Frown

Next Home Premium @ about $68/$136
This has no XP compatiblity Mode Basic Networking and as I will say Lower down its Big feature is It acts like a PVR...OH That will attract the customer and complaints Roll Eyes

This is what I have Posted(Elsewhere)albeit edited down .Much of which repeats what I said above
Also some Setup advice

This is for Windows 7 Professional which is the one to go for if you intend to run a Network without reverting to a server

quote:

Windows 7 Professional includes all the Home Premium features you love and the business features your work demands. Connect to company networks easily and more securely and share files across the various PCs in your home. In addition, you can run many Windows XP productivity programs in Windows XP Mode and recover your data easily with automatic back-ups to your home or business network.

Query: Have not looked at the "Home Premium" version specs...Will this version Not have the XP Mode? If that is the case there will be many disappointed buyers

and B) are M$ expecting People to fork out for an Upgrade to Professional? Roll Eyes

The Processor Memory/ Drive space requirements are fine (Most Machines will deal easy with it)
and then we see this...

quote:
Video card
DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or later driver

Question What cards have the WDDM Driver? and B)What will happen if this driver is missing?
I Know Just about every current Card is DirectX 9 enabled or DirectX 10 capable
But this WDDM driver is a New one on Me

But I dug about and Discovered it is currently a Vista Program Smile

quote:
Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM, also WVDDM) is the graphic driver architecture for video card drivers running Microsoft Windows versions beginning with Windows Vista. WDDM provides the functionality required to render the desktop and applications using Desktop Window Manager, a compositing window manager running on top of Direct3D 9.0Ex. It also provides device driver interfaces required by Direct3D 10 runtime

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W...Display_Driver_Model

So that clarifies that point.I expect it will be Bundled on the Disk but do err on caution and have a copy Handy to install if its missing?

And XP compatibility Mode may require some Deep delving into Windows/BIOS to get it working for you. 2 different settings depending if it's an Intel or AMD Processor.

Somebody Translate this into sense for us! Confused

quote:

Windows XP Mode requires an additional 1GB of RAM, an additional 15GB of available disk space, and a processor capable of hardware virtualization, with Intel-VT or AMD-V turned on.

And heres what I said about the Basic version to the UK:
Here is the Complete description:

quote:

Windows 7 Home Premium offers a rich, dynamic entertainment experience on your PC, making it easy to create a home network and share all of your favorite photos, videos, and music. You can even watch, pause, and rewind TV or record it to watch whenever and wherever you want.

Honestly doesn't sound much to write home about NO XP Mode...and Its a "PVR". I already have one of those Roll Eyes
Hello!? I think we want to do a Bit more than that!
And Internet Explorer is being left out too out of the UK Mix! Roll Eyes

quote:

Windows XP Mode requires an additional 1GB of RAM

So that means the Pro version Needs 2 GB RAM
Home Premium = 1 GB

We are talking Bare Minimum Specs..Another factor is the RAM Speed and there is a choice of 3 speeds (On some motherboards) The Lowest speed May cause the system to stutter under load (If its a single channel type?) Going rate for the middle speed (800mhz) RAM is about 40/45 Pounds for 4GB in 2x2GB sticks ( ddr2)
Same Brand in 4x 1Gb sticks/DIMMs,Corsair (Filling all the slots) is a few pence cheaper
