This is what happened when I tried to download Java from Stuttgart University per Tom GL2:
I got a message saying NAV was going to quarantine the infected file
I said OK
NAV deleted part of Java file
I got a message Java was downloaded
I clicked on NAV to try to open it to turn it off
Nothing happened
I tried to remove it through the Add/Remove Programs
I got a message saying "Unable to locate installation log file C:\Program Files\Norton Antivirus\nav95.isu. Uninstallation will not continue"
I am embarassed to say so, but what I have is NAV 2000 on my machine and Norton Utilities 2001. I was incapacitated for a long time and so I did not keep my computer up-to-date.
I have recently purchased McAfee Virus Scan, but have not yet installed it.
I do not want to purchase NAV 2002 because I am boycotting them in the future. I am not happy that they wanted to charge me $10 extra to renew my virus protection offline. They, of all people, should know how unsafe it is to put credit card info over the internet.

I've just downloaded msjavx86.exe from the Stuttgart University server, and it is byte-for -byte identical with the copy I downloaded from Microsoft.com. It is not an infected file.
My feeling is that you may have recently installed some software, or been invaded by an unidentified virus, which has disabled Norton Antivirus. To resolve the problem, download the newest virus definitions. Remove Norton Antivirus with the RNav.exe removal tool.
Reinstall Norton Antivirus, run the downloaded 20020823-004-i32.exe file to update the virus definitions, then do a virus scan of ALL FILES.
If NAV does not run even after reinstallation, use Symantec's online virus scan to identify any viruses on the computer, then try to locate removal information or tools specific to the viruses identified.
