I use Win Media Player, but all of a sudden, the icon won't work, neither the one on the Start line (tell me again what that thing is called!) nor the one on the desktop. What do I do? Not even start/run will open the program, it just shows me the files.

Start line is called "Task Bar" LOL
Now that I've answered the easy question...sounds like you've lost the application for media player. I suggest going to control panel, add/remove programs, and removing media player. Then try re-installing it. Media Player

Often times when a free download has been upgraded the orginal application no longer works. Anyway, try this and then let me know what happens!

That's the "Quick Launch" bar.

Georgia says it's the task bar! LOL! Whatever it's called, when I did what you suggested, redder, it came up right away. But the icon still won't work. Guess I need a new icon, huh?
I'll try what Georgia suggested. Thanks all!

Georgia, Media Player does not appear in the list of addable/removeable programs...???

The Taskbar runs along one edge (often the bottom) of the screen, and contains no icons, only task buttons which switch from one program's window to another. The Taskbar can have toolbars added to it, and these can contain icons.

"Quick Launch" is a toolbar which can be added to or removed from the Taskbar. Right-click the Taskbar and click Properties, then point to Toolbars and click "Quick Launch" (repeat to restore Quick Launch).

The icons near the clock are in the "system tray" (or just "tray"). This is a permanent, nonremovable feature of Windows, although Windows XP adds the capability to hide tray icons.

Well therein lies the problem! If you don't see it in the add/delete programs then you don't have the application on your hard-drive. If you had it installed you would see something like "Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.4"

So just visit the Microsoft site and download again. And thanks Tom for differentiating Task Bar from Quick Launch bar.

Georgia, the problem has fixed itself now without any downloading. Computers are supposed to be so logical and - what's the term for "unable to do what they're not commanded to do," - but I swear their intelligence is not artificial!

Glad to know the "Hills are alive with the sound of music" again. So, just what is it that you wanted to listen too?

Whoa, you wouldn't want me to list them all here, I'm sure. My tunes! My rock-n-roll, my love songs, my ballads, my bluegrass!

Just a note of warning to everybody about downloading music. I signed up for a free 3 day trial at Pressplay.com to get some banjo music. The offer was 3 free days and if you didn't cancel in that time, they'd start charging you. I cancelled well in time, but they charged me anyway. Be very careful with these offers, watch them carefully. There ought to be certified email!
