I have more to try, and am re-installing Win98se right now, for the 4th time, in the hopes it will work. When I try to disable the line in the System.INI files that says "Umax11.386" , it says the file is not there. Any ideas anyone?

bedstor, Yeah, I'm afraid so, I googled it several times in different ways, and nothing I read helped at all, no matter how I tried it. right now, I'm going to try installing ME, from the clean copy I have to see if it makes any difference. Thanks for trying tho!

Chris Look at it this way. Installing a new OS onto a blank or formatted computer is bound to cause teething problems... but with a good installation you'll be able to upgrade because the upgrade now has a reference point to latch on to When the "new" files are installed they convert the "old" files to the newer spec. I think thats what happened with you?

bedstor, When I tried to install Win98se on this computer, I wiped it completely clean. I dont have any update 98se CD's, I would definitely have used it if I had, . For some reason, it just wouldnt get past that vmm32.vxd error. If ME doesnt work, I'll take it back to Win 95, might be a little faster anyway, since this computer has a max RAM upgrade capability of 64MB. It already has 32MB intergrated on the motherboard. I'll be ordering a 32MB chip this week for it. Hopefully this solves the slowness, or at least speeds it up some. I appreciate the help with this, as its been driving me crazy. LOL

I agree with the "upgrade" in memory to gain some performance Being an older OS if you can get 75%-80% resources out of it thats Warp Drive ! Do a before and after Check on those numbers,Virtual Drive settings I remember sometimes can alter Performance Figures as well ,but just keep it at the automatic setting (default) XP machines run close to 100% by comparison
