I went into Network negihborhood to see if I had it setup for printer sharing. (I have 2 other computers in my house, and they are both in my network) I already had it checked off. After I clicked OK to get out of that, it asked me to insert the Windows `98 CD.

My dad went to go get it and I told him I didn't need it because I didn't change or add anything. He said I need it anyway because it wouldn't have asked otherwise.

So, my question is, do I have to have the CD at that point if I never made any changes? Or does it automatically ask for the CD regardless of whether or not you make any changes?

Thanks Smile

When you're prompted for the CD, it is because the particular file(s) needed is (are) not available on the hard drive, or the installer can't find it.

Many Windows installations do have the contents of the Windows CD on the hard drive.

Often times the address is:

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs
or
C:\Win98

You can do a search for *.cab files to see if the Windows CD content is already on your hard *drive. If it is, you can use the .cab files address instead of the CD. Once in a while, a dialog box will prompt you for the CD, but it doesn't have anyway to give it a different address. I've found that often I can just click "OK" without putting in a CD and it completes the install without problem. I assume it is getting the file information it needs from the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder (which is where the Windows CD contents are stored on my system).

I hope this is of some help!

Dwight
*The Windows CD content .cab files will have a long list of files with names like: Win98_65.cab, Win98_34.cab, Net10.cab, or Driver_17.cab. These files will all be in the same folder.
