I need to type a music theory book I have written (grades 1- 5)onto computer. Sibelius 4 is highly recommend as the easiest to use but includes many functions I do not need (e.g. thousands of worksheets, facilities to compose to video ...) and all music programmes differ widely in price. I simply (or not so simply!) need a programme that enables me to combine paragraphs of text with examples of music notation (i.e.on manuscript), drawings (scanned in?), and tables. Is Sibelius 4 the only computer programme that allows you to copy and paste music notation/ manuscript to a word document?- Surely not! (It seems to advitise itself as such) Are there cheaper programmes that meet the criteria. The eventual aim is to publish my work. Please could someone advise! I would be very grateful (P.s. This is my first question I have posted on answerpool).

I'm sorry for failing to see your post earlier. I don't know if this will help you or not, but you can use MS Word to do all the items that you listed.

You can import music symbols using the Insert menu/ Symbols command.

Look at this page

From Word Help:

About symbols and special characters
Symbols and special characters that don't appear on your keyboard can be displayed on your screen and printed. For example, you can insert symbols such as ¼ and ©, special characters such as an em dash (—), ellipsis (…), or nonbreaking space, as well as many international characters such as Ç and ë.

You can insert symbols and characters by using the Symbol dialog box or shortcut keys. You can also use AutoCorrect to automatically replace text you type as symbols.

The types of symbols and characters you can insert depend on the available fonts. For example, some fonts may include fractions (¼), international characters (Ç, ë), and international monetary symbols (£, ¥). The built-in Symbol font includes arrows, bullets, and scientific symbols. You might also have additional symbol fonts, such as Wingdings, which include decorative symbols.

You can quickly insert a recently used symbol by clicking a symbol in the Recently used symbols list in the Symbol dialog box, and you can resize the Symbol dialog box so that you can view more symbols.

You can also use the Symbol dialog box to insert Unicode characters into a document and to find the character code for Unicode characters.

By using the character code, you can later insert Unicode without opening the Symbol dialog box. Type the character code directly into a document, and then press ALT+X.

I hope this willhelp!

For the purposes of sending your final version off to a publisher, the best way to format that would probably be in the .PDF (Portable Document Format). You can download a free .PDF print program here.

By "Print to .PDF" I do not mean to print out on paper, but rather to make a .pdf file. When you send a .pdf formatted file to a publisher you can be sure that they are seeing it exactly as you have written it. If you send the file in MS Word format for instance, the version they see will most likely have some variances due to program version differences. These aren't major and for most files not a problem. But for a publisher, it is most important that they get your work in the exact format that you have written it.

Dear Dwight,

I have just discovered your messages.Thankyou so much and for sparing time to answer my question in so much detail. I am shortly due to teach but I will come back to read your mail later today in more detail and consider what i can do.

P.S. Is there a bass clef I can import from anywhere and how can I join staves together which I need to do for examples of piano music?

THANKYOU...
