Can I use a Full Restore disk that has Windows XP on it to overwrite Windows Vista on a laptop?
Do I need to remove Vista first? Do I use Add/Remove programs and remove everything or just insert the disk in the cd drive and let it install over everything? The Full Restore disk came with a Dell desktop I have. Thank you very much for any help. DAG

I have the same question... I absolutely can't stand Vista and would like to install XP on my new laptop instead. Hopefully someone can answer our question! Smile

If your laptop or desktop came with Windows XP, you can use the disc to replace Vista with Windows XP. DO NOT use a restore disc intended for another machine. (Two problems: 1. PIRACY 2. Drivers and extra software)

There is nothing special that you need to do, most restore discs DESTROY ALL DATA before copying over the system image containing Windows XP. (Hint hint: Back up your documents!!)

If the machine came with a Windows Vista restore disc, and your purchase was fairly recent, call your computer's manufacturer (Dell) about trading Windows Vista for Windows XP. It may cost you a few dollars (Usually around $10) for them to mail a disc.

If your computer's manufacturer will not provide you with a downgrade, you will likely have to purchase your own copy of Windows XP - starting at $99. All versions of Microsoft Windows since XP are required to go through activation, which ties your Windows license to a particular piece of hardware. Windows 2000 is the last version to not require activation.

Hope this was helpful!

Thank you both! Yes, it was helpful. XP disk did not come w/ laptop and no restore disk for Vista. Will check into downgrade from vendor. Sounds like we'll have to buy a new copy like you said.

Reason for wanting to switch is lengthy. The short answer is my dad doesn't like it.

Thank you again! This site rocks!
