Would you please let me know what Freeware Speed Downloaders you use and what your opinion of them are?

With download times if possible when using 56kps Modems.

I use Star Dowloader and although I am happy with it I am wondering if there is anything better available.

Perhaps you could try GoZilla. It has advertising included with it but it also has some extra advanced features.

But those things split the files into pieces and if the thing gets stuck or can't resume U're out of luck. Time to go high speed.

BROOKERS:

I tried Gozilla and got rid of it...not cuz of the ads...crashed my PC. I've heard others say they've had similar problems with other speed downloading programs. After my problems with Gozilla, I decided not to bother. I much prefer to have something that lets me pause my download and go back later to resume it. I use Fresh Download from Fresh Devices.

Totally free, no ads and works as advertized. They ask you to register, but only send you notifications on their products; you can opt out of these notifications anytime you choose. I've used it for 2 years now, and really like it. I'd rather it take longer, with fewer problems, than faster and have to worry about crashes or ads.
