The problem I'm having is that this pc takes intermittent spells of shutting down, and not a proper shutdown, it just suddenly goes to the screen that says : Its now safe to turn off your computer.

When the comp is started back up, Scan disk wants to run due to improper shutdown. From what I'm told, this pc has not been on the internet to the best of the owner's (my father-in-law), knowledge, so I'm not suspecting a virus. In fact, I think its corrupted Windows files, which is why I posted here in Software. This comp also will freeze up, other than the mouse, at times when opening programs, or just clicking the Start button. Any ideas? Need any more info? Let me know! Thanks!

Edit your MSDOS.SYS file
In the [options] section
add the line
Autoscan=0

Personally, I am not fond of this method, but it will stop it

It does suggest that the file structure integrity is failing

In the case of 98 or Me, it is a problem with the IDE cache, but such problems were never reported with 95, and since 95 is no longer supported by M$, there is unlikely to be a repair for it either

It won't work on XP because XP doesn't use True DOS

In Windows 95
Open My Computer.

Click the View |Options.

Select the View Tab.

Select the Show all files Radio Button.

Click OK.
