Hi all, I'm having a problem with IE6 on my Win XP Pro machine freezing after clicking more than about 4 links or buttons on certain sites. The window will freeze, but the mouse will still work. I can click on other things, but they wont come up or open. Pushing Ctrl-Alt_dlte does nothing, so I cant close it that way, and when I try to close the window, it will show me the "End now" option, but when I click that, it does nothing. I've looked in Add/Remove programs for the option to repair IE6, but its not there. I've tried uninstalling the IE6 update that was there, but it made no difference. The last time this started happening, I went ahead and re-formatted, and re-installed XP Pro, as it was about time to do that anyway,(i do it once a year), and all has been fine for a few months. Now its started again. Any ideas? This a built system with an Athlon 1 gig processor, Asus A7V133/550/WOA-UAYZ motherboard, 448MB RAM, two 40 gig Hard drives. Everything else works fine, but this things with IE freezing is driving me nuts!

Have you gotten Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)?

If you haven't updated Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Then you can try Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (Service pack 1):

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx

Both are the same package, however the Explorer one is meant for use with all versions of windows and selects from several options (depending on what version Windows you run) what to update you machine with.

Win-XP SP1 is a critical update and can be found at: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Mind it will ask to look at your machine to see what you have and offer up the things you need.

If you reinstalled XP it is possible that your Critical Updates are not up to date, and this could cause an issue with Explorer 6.

More information on XP and Explorer can be found here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

Another alternative is to just leave off using Explorer and going with another browser.

There are many options out there, one option is Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org/) which is kind of cool.

Cheers

I've been to Windows Update, and gotten all the updates available for my machine. I may have to go to another browser if this keeps up and I dont find an answer. Any other ideas?

Well, IE6 is not at fault... Some program is causing the problem....
Are you using Norton ? I've heard of Norton causing problems like this before..l.

Have you tried System Restore: Start,All Programs, Accessories,System Tools, and then System Restore. Choose a date when computer was working good. Restore to that point. It is easy to do and completely reversible.
