If you really want an OS for fifty bucks, perhaps you should consider trying Lindows. It makes a nice Windows replacement. It's also immune to Windows holes and viruses since it's Linux based. Worth looking into. http://www.lindows.com/lindows_sales_intro.php

There are, as far as I know, no "new" DOS-based OSes. I believe the best version with DOS underpinings is Windows 98 SE, but XP is pretty capable at running 16-bit (DOS) programs, if you have the need.
What does OEM stand for? What is the difference between OEM and the full retail package?
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. Retail versions come in a fancy box, OEM does not. Retail versions also contain a printed manual. Customers who purchase the retail version are eligible for tech support and different rebates. As a compensation, we at BlazingCDs offer any upgrades or new software you might need. If we don't have it online, it doesn't mean we don't have it. We always assist our customers.
But this is partially false isn't it cuz MS said that the OEM version doean't come with a Recovery Console?
Or do they mean just the CD and not actually OEM?

I am a computer idiot, but I thought I would put my two cents in about XP. It is a large program. My son tried to install in on one of my old computers. It took up so much hard drive, it didn't work out so well at all. You may need to add hard drive to your existing computer and have a later processor for XP to work well.
At first, I hated XP. It is a bit different than the 98 versions. Now, I adore it. If I were the only user of the computer, the 98 versions would be just fine, but I'm not. I have two teens and my husband that flips over sports sites. This way, each of us can have our own separate accounts for documents, music, favorites, etc. I had icons covering my ME. We fought over wallpaper and screensavers. The favorites list was never ending. The folders were jammed with everyone's things combined.
If you have multi users, XP is definitely the way to go. For single users, I wouldn't bother.
ME is the worst OS in the world so XP will always be a welcome upgrade. But XP-PRO as mentioned HERE only uses 1.5GB of HD disk space which is not a lot concidering most new computers come with 40-80GB HDs. Only really ancient machines under 300MHZ had under 5GB HDs. So a new machine is the only answer in any event.

Xp Pro has been great for me, I havent had ANY freezeups and its been easy, though a little involved to learn. Of course, that part doesnt matter compared to the problems I had with Win98se at times. Feel free to email me if you like, I may have a better answer for you about getting XP Pro, if you'd like to discuss it. My email is in my profile.
