Windows ME
576 RAM
AMD Duron 700mhz Processor

I cannot understand my problem is happening and would like to know if anyone can give me some advice as to why my system resources are so low?

I have had this computer now for 4 - 5 years and it has always been reliable. Usually I have running multiple programs at once without the need to even reboot all day. Recently I made a few changes to my system and I am now running low on my system resources very quickly.

Two weeks ago I decided to upgrade from dial up to DSL (Voyager100 modem) and upgrade from AOL 8.0 to AOL 9.0. At the same time I also plugged in another USB controller card to give me another 4 ports. Before this was carried out I did a complete factory restore on my pc to get rid of any junk and spruce it up.

I bring up aol and my resources drop to 44%. I open a media player and an IE browser and I am running on about 20% and lose a further 5% with each window opened. As you can see it does not take much to freeze the pc now. I have tried all I can think of, factory restore, cleared cookies, temp files, cache reinstalled the aol adapt, ScanDisc, DeFragged, run msconfig and removed everything I can from the startup tray.

Could it be;

AOL 9.0?
Voyager100 Modem?
DSL?
USB Card?
Possibly something more serious I have overlooked?

Has anyone any suggestions to solving this?

I look forward to any help,
Thanks

Thank you for providing your system details! This Microsoft page explains how to use the Windows ME System Resource Meter and may be helpful: Click Here

This page discusses using the Microsoft Configuration Utility to troubleshoot system problems: Click Here

You mentioned the problem seems related to starting your AOL 9.0 program. Can you uninstall the new version and revert to the older version to see if there is any change? If not, can you uninstall the AOL completely and see if removing the software solves the problem? If it does, then you can seek support assistance from AOL.

I hope something here will help!

90% of all resource problems are caused by poorly written software, and in almost all cases it is spyware that causes the problems

Start off by downloading the following programs

Spybot &
Adaware

Install the two programs and update them
Run each adaware first, getting it to fix everything it finds, then do the same with spybot

You may need to reboot after scanning, as not everything can be removed when Windows is running

Now download Hijack this

When you have done all that, Go into your documents and make a new folder and name it HJT or something you like. Then unzip HJT into your new folder. If you ever need to restore an item you will not have that option from a temp dir launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it

Do not change anything just yet
