Sending documents in PDF rather than .doc format is desireable for many reasons. Up to now, creating a pdf document usually required one to buy Adobe acrobat or some other third party software. It can't be done directly from Microsoft Office.
I just installed the latest release of . Open Office 1.1 It can directly save a document as a pdf - which I think is very cool! For my use, this feature makes Open Office not only free, but functionally better than Word.

Yes Adobe "READER" is free. But you can't create .pdf documents with the free reader.
The full Adobe package needed to create .pdf's is a few hundred bucks. There are some cheaper .pdf writers available, and even a couple of free services; but so far, I think this is the only word processing program that can create .pdf files directly.
