I recently downloaded Internet Explorer 8. Before downloading the new program, I tried to remove the old one, but I think in doing so I deleted something I need. I can't log into any of the bookclubs. I noticed that the speaker doesn't work and the speaker icon is missing from my toolbar. What did I delete, and how do I get it back? I have a Dell desktop computer with Windows XP.

Have you tried system restore to an earlier date?
Click on "start" then "help & support" then on the right side click " undo changes to tour computer with system restore" and follow the instructions.

No I never thought of that. I found system restore, but it was turned off. I turned it on, but I can't go back beyond the point when I turned it on.

I think By "deleting" the Older version you have as you say Deleted your Bookclubs/bookMarks /Favorites Frown

As I understand it I think you have to overwrite IE7 (and there is an option to restore back to IE7 if you wish)
So I think the only thing to do (damage limitation) is reinstall IE 7 OK
IE 8 is still Not 100% ready
Click this link www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx
Now Look for a Message
like this at the Bottom of this Page
quote:
Get Internet Explorer 7
Based on your operating system, the version of Internet Explorer 7 below is best for your computer.

Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
This is the most common version for use with Windows XP Professional Edition SP2 and Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

The Green Download button is under this Message in the left corner
May say something else for your setup but it will be the correct advice
Download is about 16MB for IE7 (Won't take long)

Put it this way, this link will give you the Version which is Suitable for your setup

As for the "missing" Volume Control Icon
Go into the Control Panel (on the Start menu)
Locate/click the Icon Sounds and Audio Devices Properties
Now all you do when the window opens is Tick the Place Volume icon in the Taskbar box
Also move the Volume to High and make sure the Mute box is unticked
Next Click the Apply Button then the OK button to Save the settings and Close the Window Smile

DO Try the System Restore First. Go back to the 1st Highlighted date before you Installed IE8
You may get some of your bookmarks back (No guarantee)

I tried to download IE7, but when it got to install I was informed it couldn't continue because it detected a later version. Am I going to have to delete 8 before I can go back to 7?

If you had IE6 or older installed there was a repair option on the Control Panel Uninstall
But with Versions 7 & 8 the Repair is made by overwriting the old copy (Keeps your Personal data intact) Smile
The NO-NO is attempting to Delete IE
You will not be able to connect up if this is not in place Red Face You may have just about got away with it! The Program still requires overwriting

Delete IE8
If it still cannot delete
Go to www.ccleaner.com and download CCleaner
then click on the Tools button
In the window locate the Internet Explorer 8 line (Click on it to "Highlight" the line) then move to the 3 buttons to the right click the "Run Uninstaller" and see what happens..
Next click on the Registry Button to the Left
then Click the Scan for Issues Button

Should produce a lot of lines (of gobbledegook) as it clears up for the First time ...Nothing to worry about
Next when it finishes (Few seconds) the Adjoining Button will Light Up "Fix selected issues" There will be a backup "save" message flashed up click "NO"
Then a new window, click the "Fix All Issues" button and you can exit this Program
Now return to the IE download link and You'll be able to download IE7 now Smile

Thank you for all your help. I decided to wait until morning and when I tried again IE7 downloaded. Other than messing with my links (it alphabetized them again) it seems to be working. I tried to put the speaker back on the toolbar, but when I click on it, I'm told the volume program isn't intalled, which is wrong because it worked until a few days ago. I've looked in add program as instructed, but I don't see anything about volume.

Volume is a Windows program
and The Volume Icon does go walkabout sometimes (I suffer from this issue) Have to go back to the the section with the 2 tick boxes and click the "Advanced" button to reveal the full Volume slider panel

Move all the sliders to the top
then Look at the slider on the Left this ia the Master Volume there is a Tick box here to Mute all...Is it Ticked? (Untick it) then move across the other sections and do the same
Only volume slider I have lowered & Muted is the Phone line (Used for Dialup modem)

PS Do also push on the Speaker lead/s into the back of the computer Should be in the Green socket and Increase the volume control on the speaker
That covers all bases so there is a better than 90% chance your sound will be coming through loud and clear
Smile
