Instead of spending hours searching the web, I'm hoping someone knows the answer to this. How do they make beer green? I'm really hoping it's something more sophisticated than food coloring! And I've also heard that green beer has been outlawed in Maryland because of it being a health problem. Anybody else heard this?

Well Jenni, it's something more sophisticated then food coloring....NOT! At least not here in Atlanta. When local bars and restaurants serve green beer it's just regular old beer on tap with a good dose of green food coloring.

I have not heard that green beer has been outlawed due to health problems. I can't imagine what those health problems would be except for alcohol poisoning. I will be curious to see what other members find out about your question.

I hate to break it to you but that's how green beer is made according to the recipe that I found...

Ingredients:
  • Ale (one annoys or 325 bottle = mililiter)
  • Blue Curaco (2 soperas spoonfuls)
  • Ice (to the taste)
  • Green food coloring

    Directions:
Blend ingredients together. Add three drops of food coloring, and serve in a pitcher.

    Source: Green Beer

The curaco is interesting though, considering it's blue and it's an orange liqueur! Didn't expect that one.
