Question:
It's all over the news--the immigrant girl getting not one, but two sets of hearts and lungs.

Are you an organ donor? If so, why? If not, why?

BTW Yes. I am.

Choices:
Yes
No
I'll sign my card later
I was, but I'm not anymore
I'm afraid to do it

I know, I know.....I answered No and cannot give a good explanation - - I feel the need to go out with what I came in with.....perhaps some may think that is wrong and perhaps selfish, but it is my decision to make...

I am an organ donor because I am a nurse to save lives.. does that have to stop posthumously?

Lydia, have you considered donating your body to a medical school? You do keep all your parts AND you teach new doctors about the secrets of life and death.

Yes, I'm a donor and wouldn't have it any other way. I think that if something happened to me, and there was someone who's life could be saved because of something that I'll never need again, by all means, let them have it.
I would hope that if my daughter ever needed something like that, there would be an organ donor for her Smile

I'm not. I don't expect anyone else to understand my reasoning. Anyhow, here it is.

I'm opposed to high-tech medicine. That means I will not be having an organ transplant myself.

This is what I think is wrong with the concept:

1. People with serious birth defects will live to reproduce and pass their genes into the gene pool. In the next generation, there will be more demand for organs. Where are they to come from?

2. Newborns are subjected to very risky and painful procedures. Sometimes they are just guinea pigs. The procedures often fail. What purpose did their suffering achieve? The development of high-tech medicine.

3. The demand for organs has led to the most horrible exploitation of the very poor in third world countries. They are lied to: "You'll be fine with just one kidney!" and sometimes they are kidnapped and murdered for their organs. There is an especially high demand for organs for children under the age of one year. Where does this lead? Baby factories, where babies are grown so their parts can be harvested?

4. This type of medicine adds enormously to the cost of medical care for everyone.

I think the emphasis in medical care should be

A) prevention: nutrition, exercise, weight control, prenatal care

B) eradicating communicable disease

C) treating injuries to otherwise healthy people

D) reasonably prolonging the lives of the elderly, but not beyond reason

People should know when it's time to go. That time might be when a person is 65 or 95 -- or newborn. If the autonomous body cannot survive, it's time to go. Otherwise, where do you draw the line? A 150-year-old rich guy who's had 15 or 20 organ transplants but his mind is gone and yet he's still scared to die?

You can't have had that many and someone didn't die to save your life.

Yes, I would be one too. What possible use when I'm gone do I have for my organs? If they can benefit anyone I would like that very much.

Sammy, make sure that your family and friends know this. Make sure it's written on your drivers license or ID and put it in writing anywhere else that's legal documents too, will..etc. It's so important that you tell people, if you die suddenly, as a RN, you know they only have a limited amount of time to harvest organs. I tell everyone I know Smile

HEY ANSWERPOOL, IF ANYONE ASKS, I'M AN ORGAN DONOR!!!!!!! Wink

Yes, I have carried a donor card for many years.

Recently I've been told that because I suffer from a disease whose cause is unknown (multiple sclerosis), then my organs probably wouldn't be used. I do keep intending to look into this. If it is the case, then I will donate said organs (and anything else they want) to medical research.

No, I'm not.

I'm a donor. I have no use for my organs after I'm gone, so if someone else can use them, so much the better.

Thanks Pup. I don't have it written anywhere but, I have told everyone! Also I understand people who do not want to donate their organs.

Yes I am. Let them take whatever they can use. I won't need it anymore. Organ Donor is on my driver's license and my family and my doctor are also aware of it.

I am a designated donor; it just makes too much sense. It's like giving away clothes that are
still in reasonably good shape;I don't need them anymore so if someone can use them, please do so.

My only problem with the donor program --- hopefully it's based on need rather than greed. It's just hard to imagine a multi-millonaire waiting in line for ANYTHING.

i'm an organ donor, i'll donate everything except for my eyes. I don't know why, but I must have my eyes. Something about seeing things forever. I must be buried with my eyes.

Absolutely yes. They can take what they like and throw what's left in the bin.

I think Babs made some good points. I voted yes. I'm a donor right now becuase my parents put it on there with a 'hey, why not' I think. Maybe I'll change to not a donor one day.

I am a donor because if there is any way I could help someone live because of my death, then I wouldn't have died in vain.

Hey -
If you can catch 'em - you can have 'em! Big Grin

Yes - I'm a donor! If I can't use them and someone else can -
Go for it! Big Grin
(It's on my driver's license;
Also on my donor's card - but one of my witnesses has since become a donor...)

Like jusork I am but agree with the points bab makes. A transplant for an alchoholic or an 70 somethng year oldmakes no sense.

I was wondering where you get a donor card at?

Ive been an organ donor for many years now and have donated nearly 70 litres of blood in the last 25 years, I'm Rhesus neg and am often been called to give extra donations which I do willingly.
I had a sister who died in 1975( aged 10) who was born with a hole in her heart. If this was nowadays, she would have been a ideal candidate for a heart transplant. If I can help just one person after I've gone it will be worthwhile.

Good for you, Jenny! What a wonderful way to honor and remember your sister.

no, i am not, and never will be. i dont really like the human race, most people arent worth saving, and there are far far too many people on the planet as it is.
if i knew the person, and they were a decent, caring human being, i would be the first in line. i just dont want my organs going to save the life of someone that i would rather see dead.

Yes I am an organ donor. They can take whatever they want from me after I am dead, use it for experiments or whatever. My soul will be gone, and if the rest can be useful to future generations, then why not?

I also give blood when I can (I get tattooes regularly and have to wait a year after each one to donate again), and am on the marrow donor register for several years, but have never been called yet.

I am also an organ donor, as well as a regular blood donor and on the National Registry for Bone Marrow Transplants.

When my oldest daughter was born lo those many years ago, I discovered my blood type is only common to 6% of the population. As soon as I could after I had her, I started donating blood, and over the years have donated about 6 gallons.

I have no problem at all with doctors using any part of me that someone else needs once I'm gone. I like the idea of being able to help save someone, either from blindness with a cornea, or their very life with a major organ.
