I purchased a Generic Brand Router capable of 102.11 g and it is attached to my desktop Via IEEE connectors to computer and my windstream dsl modem I also purchased 2 Gigafast Usb Mini wireless usb adapters, One to attach to my Laptop and the second one to attach to my other desktop computer...The problem seems to be that although the laptop is connecting to the router and shows i am on the internet I cannot receive my e-mail from Yahoo or download any files, However the Yahoo Instant messenger seems to function properly and communicate with the internet fine Via the wireless USB adapter on the laptop,Also I seem to receive the incoming mail notifier with its alarm as well, but when i try to enter my e-mail i get the message the Internet explorer cannot access the page and no e-mail.Is there anyone out there that has had this problem or who can give me some advice on setting it up properly i would greatly appreciate it, I am a complete novice: Thank you

First, does your laptop connect and download mail/files when connected via a cable to your DSL modem? If so, does it connect and download mail/files when connected via cable to your router?

If it does not work correctly with the cable connection, then the problem is with the Laptop setup, not the wireless. If this is the case, please tell us about your laptop system (details shown below) and perhaps we can provide some help.

If it does connect correctly with the cable connection, then the problem must lie with the wireless connection. Since it is connecting with the Instant Messenging, I wonder if there is some type of Firewall blocking the wireless connection to the Web browser (Internet Explorer).

Do you have a Firewall installed? A Windows Firewall perhaps? If you're running Windows XP in the laptop, open the Start --> Control Panel --> Security and see if the Firewall is enabled. If so, you might try disabling it and seeing if connects. If so, restore the Firewall and you will just need to give your Internet Explorer permission to access the net. If you're running Windows XP, you can download Internet Explorer 7.0 (if you don't already have it) and let the browser program diagnose and repair the Internet connection.

You can determine what Internet Explorer version you have by opening the Internet Explorer --> Help menu --> About Internet Explorer.

If you have version 6.0, you can connect your computer via the cable and download the update at the Windows Update site (Internet Explorer --> Tools menu --> Windows Update).

If your Operating System is older than Windows XP please let us know what you are running. This page may help with your system identification.

Thank you for your prompt answer Dwight, I have tried disabling the firewal in windows both from the main computer and the laptop with no effect on the program at all, The laptop has win XP and I installed the Ie7 still does the same thing, its mind bogling to a novice because while i am on the laptop i get the new message notification in the lower right hand corner and the warning tone.I have Network Magic installed on both computers and it indicates that I am connected to the home system and the internet and the messenger works without flaw, but the e-mail says the explorer cannot find the site, I tried getting to other sights thru the search engines with the same message and it will not download from the explorer a at all, I am using the free version Of AVG virus software on the laptop and the auto uploads seem to be working on that when the laptop is first turned on as it does on the mainframe and they upgrade ok.Also i tried to access the 192.168.1.1 for the router setup and i get a confusing menu asking for the same number choices for the number on many items, any help would be a godsend since i am so confused now that i dont know how to proceed...Thanks Joe

OK, did you try connecting the laptop directly to the DSL modem? That is; just bypass the router and connect it directly to the DSL?

Does the Internet connection work correctly with this setup? Does it still work with the Windows Firewall?

I understand that you're using the AVG antivirus software (a good choice, in my opinion). Does this version of AVG include a firewall? If not, fine; but if so, please disable that firewall to test this direct connection.

The point of bypassing both the wireless and the router is to try to narrow the possible connections problem list.

If the computer connects normally when directly connected to the DSL modem, try connecting it via cable to the router. Follow the setup directions when going to the http://192.168.1.1 setup.

Plug in your router modem to your internet modem then you can access your http://192.168.1.1

If you don’t have your router modem connected you will see the error page. If so, you have one of these two problems: Your IP is not recognized or your default gateway in not found. The procedure you need to follow is: Open Internet Explorer, then:

1. Click the tools menu
2. Click the internet options command
3. Delete the Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and the History.
4. Reset your router modem. You should see a tiny pin hole somewhere in the back of your router modem.
5. Put in a pin (like a straightened paper clip) and press it and hold it for 30 seconds, then power it all down.
6. Restart your internet modem wait till all the lights are on then turn on your router modem.
7. Once this is done, type into your browser: http://192.168.1.1 and login.
Hopefully this should reset your IP and your default gateway. If this doesn’t work, see if you can find a technical support site for your genetic router and seek another solution to this connection problem.

When replying, please address each question written above with a "?" mark as I need to know the answer in order to go to the next step. If you can establish the normal connection using a cable with the router installed, then we can proceed to the wireless connection. If you cannot make the connection work when connected via the direct connection, then we need to fix this problem first before attempting a wireless connection.
