I recently installed Win Xp Home and everything worked well. I have a DVD-ROM and a CD-R/RW which suddenly have stopped working. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing but Xp keeps coming back and saying it cannot install.
Can anybody help?

If you do not have a lot of data on the computer you will miss, you could use the format option of Windows and start over. My husband and I have done that several times over the last 14 years of owning computers.

However, until you have some additional advice from our computer Guru's here, you can refrain from that step yet if you do not feel comfortable with it.

Welcome to the Pool. Glad to see you aboard! Smile

Since the problem is common to both devices, I'm wondering if you have a loose connection. If you press the "drawer open" button, does the door on both or either open?

If not, then I would suspect power. This doesn't seem likely for both, since there should be one power for each and I doubt two cables would come loose at the same time. Since there aren't other power related problems, I doubt the power supply is bad.

Are both connected via the same ribbon cable? If so, then I would suspect a loose cable connection at the motherboard.

Thank you for the welcome, I appreciate it.

On re-reading my post, I find what I said is misleading. The uninstall and re-install refers to the DVD & RW, not to Windows.

I have a dual boot with Windows Me and when I am in Me both the DVD and the RW work perfectly, so must assume it is a wrinkle with Win Xp.
Sorry about that.

Since the CD devices both work in the ME boot, then I don't think it would be a loose cable.

Have you tried updating the drivers for WinXP? I would guess that the devices are trying to use the Windows ME drivers when you're in the XP boot. That is a problem with dual boot setups.

This is a link to the Microsoft Windows XP newsgroups. I suggest you click the "hardware" option and seek advice there. Windows XP Newsgroups

I hope this is of some help!
