I have a 1st generation Apple ipod that I need to connect to my computer. My computer is Windows XP and only has USB ports, no Firewire port. Is there such an adapter that will let me connect a Firewire device on one end to a USB port on the other? I need to purchase a cable asap. Thanks!

Actually, a Firewire card might be cheaper than a Firewire -> USB cable. The last I checked, you can get a Firewire card from Wal-Mart or the like, for around $15-$20.
Northwind, there is no connection on the base of my 1st generation ipod. That is why I'm having so much trouble. I need to know if they make such a thing as a cable with just a usb connection on one end and a firewire connection on the other. Thanks for your help.

Firewire and USB are two completely different things. I don't think it's possible to interchange the two. Firewire runs at a different speed, and is a completely different transfer protocol (it requires drivers).
The only way this is going to happen, is like I previously mentioned.. a Firewire card.
